The 2020 MLB season will look a lot different if it happens, but one rule change could be hugely significant for 2020 and beyond.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, MLB’s proposal to play the 2020 season would include a universal designated hitter rule. The proposal is partially in place to try to protect pitchers from injury after a shortened spring training.
The universal DH rule is part of the proposal that MLB is expected to present to players on Tuesday.

One question is whether this could be a precursor to this rule becoming permanent. We’ve heard rumblings about a universal DH rule for years now, and it sounded like a realistic possibility that it could happen within a year or two even before the season was suspended. If it comes into place in 2020, it’s worth wondering if it will ever go away.
