Major League Baseball could be seeing another two-way player next season.
Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Friday that he and GM Neal Huntington spoke to pitcher Steven Brault during his exit interview about playing some outfield in 2020, per Adam Berry of MLB.com. The 27-year-old Brault was a two-way player in college and said that he would “love” to do so.
Brault, who went 4-6 this season with a 5.07 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 108.1 innings pitched, was drafted in 2013 and made his MLB debut in 2016. Prior to that, he played first base, center field, and right field in college at Regis University in addition to pitching.
The list of current two-way players at the MLB level is brief (Shohei Ohtani, Michael Lorenzen, Brendan McKay, etc.), so Brault would be joining some rare company. Plus in addition to his versatility on the diamond, Brault has also shown in recent years that he has some other hidden talents too.
