Steven Wright may not get much of a chance to build on his breakout 2016.
Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports on Wednesday that the Boston Red Sox knuckleballer is meeting with the team to discuss the possibility of undergoing left knee surgery that would “likely” end his season.
The 32-year-old has made just five starts for the team this season, going 1-3 with an ugly 8.25 ERA. Lingering issues with the knee dating back to spring training may have been the culprit for his struggles, and he was placed on the 10-day disabled list earlier this week.
It’s a disappointing turn of events for Wright, who made a splash last season with a 13-6 record and a 3.33 ERA en route to making his first career All-Star team. The Red Sox have already been stung by the injury absence of another key starter, and now they may be without one of the precious few righties in their rotation for the remainder of the year as well.
