Report: Celtics still ‘very interested’ in trading for Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis probably would not be thrilled about a trade to the Boston Celtics if Kyrie Irving is planning to leave in free agency, but that is apparently not going to deter the team from making an effort to acquire the star big man.

Ben Stinar of AmicoHoops.net reports that the Celtics remain “very interested” in trading for Davis this offseason. There has been talk that Boston is not on the list of preferred destinations that Davis gave the New Orleans Pelicans during the season, but he does not have a no-trade clause. He does, however, have just one year remaining on his contract before he can opt out, so trading significant assets for him would come with a risk.

The Toronto Raptors took a similar risk when they acquired Kawhi Leonard, and they were rewarded with a trip to the NBA Finals at worst. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge also said this week that he does not regret the Irving trade regardless of what happens this summer, so that could be an indication that he won’t hesitate to go after Davis even without a long-term extension.

Boston may have the most desirable package of players and picks to offer the Pelicans, especially if they’re willing to trade Jayson Tatum and/or Jaylen Brown. Davis’ father ripped the Celtics several months ago for the way they treated one of their former star players, but Ainge may be confident a season in Boston will do a lot to change that opinion.
