Kenneth Faried: There will be a female head coach in the NBA

Becky Hammon

The San Antonio Spurs made history last summer when they hired former WNBA star Becky Hammon as an assistant coach. The Sacramento Kings followed suit a few weeks ago, announcing that they have added Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lierberman to their coaching staff. Will there be a female head coach in the NBA at some point down the line?

Kenneth Faried thinks there will be, and the Denver Nuggets forward is all for the idea.

TMZ caught up with Faried over the weekend and asked him if a woman could coach an NBA team.

“Why not? It was looked upon that an African-American would never be a head coach of an NBA team,” Faried said. “Now look at history — it’s been rewritten. Becky’s out there doing her thing. I’m supportive of that. I’m supportive of what the Spurs did for her.”

Faried praised Hammon for proving what she is capable of as a coach in the NBA Summer League.

“Her winning the Summer League was a big step overall because she was able to be the head coach of that team and go on to win the Summer League championship,” he said. “It’s just minor steps right now being taken toward the bigger picture. There will be a woman NBA head coach one day.”

Capable female coaches are slowly starting to get the recognition they deserve. An NFL team even hired a female assistant this offseason. It will likely take several more years, but a female coach in the NBA seems inevitable.
