LeBron James reportedly pulled a petty move on Adam Silver
LeBron James Watch is still on, perhaps in part due to pure pettiness.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star pulled a petty move on NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Cleveland-area writer Andy Baskin reported on Wednesday during an appearance on 92.3 The Fan. Baskin says that James and his crew were ready to announce a decision last week but that they were “irritated” at Silver’s recent comments about James’ free agency.
As a result, Baskin says, James decided to hold back on making an announcement. Now James still has yet to announce his next team over three weeks into the official NBA free agency period.
For context, Silver addressed James’ ongoing free agency at the CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit last week. Silver said that James’ waiting period was impacting the NBA’s schedule-making for next season, seemingly implying that James needed to get a move on.
Silver took over as NBA commissioner in 2014, succeeding the late David Stern. While there have never been any public signs of friction between him and James, Silver certainly appears to have really annoyed The King with his latest comments.
Now this week, some signs are emerging that the 41-year-old James may finally be nearing a decision. But at this point, it is very clear that James is willing to drag out the drama for as long as he would like to.
Report: Steve Kerr does not want 1 player on the Warriors
Steve Kerr has one potential headache that he would rather avoid.
The Golden State Warriors head coach Kerr did not want the team to pursue a trade for Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. last February, Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer reported on Wednesday. O’Connor adds that there is also little reason to believe that Kerr wants Porter now.
Porter, the former NBA lottery pick, is coming off a career year in which he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 assists, and 3.0 assists per game. But this offseason, Porter has emerged as a potential trade candidate for a number of teams, including the Warriors.
That is because Porter is currently facing an uncertain future with the Nets. The 28-year-old forward is entering his final season under contract next year at $40.8 million and has yet to make much progress on an extension with the team. As a result, Porter has recently been the subject of trade rumors.
Golden State needs some extra scoring punch with Jimmy Butler (torn ACL) set to miss a sizable chunk of next season. The Warriors also lost the likes of Pat Spencer and Quinten Post in free agency this summer and have yet to make any meaningful new additions.
That said, Porter remains an enigmatic player who is prone to poor shot selection, defensive lapses, and generally inconsistent play. It does not sound like that is an enigma which Kerr (who recently returned to the Warriors on an interesting new deal) wants to solve at this point.
Caitlin Clark gets heated with Saniya Rivers during game
Saniya Rivers has become the latest opponent to mix it up with Caitlin Clark.
Rivers and the Connecticut Sun faced off Wednesday against Clark and the Indiana Fever. In the third quarter at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., Clark was being defended by Rivers, who funneled Clark into help defense provided by Sun teammate Olivia Nelson-Ododo.
Referees whistled Nelson-Odobo for a foul on the play, and Rivers did not agree with the call. Rivers and Clark then started yelling at each other with Clark at one point pointing at the video board to illustrate her point.

Clark and Rivers were handed double technical fouls for the sequence. But Clark then proceeded to hit both free throws that ensued from the original foul on Nelson-Odobo.
The Fever were up big at the time and went on to defeat the Sun by a lopsided final of 123-88 (with Clark leading all players with 27 points and 11 assists on a nifty 8/13 shooting). While the incident with Rivers ended up being relatively tame, Clark was of course involved in a much uglier episode with the Sun around this time last season.
Rockets poach a cult hero coach from the Thunder
Kevin Durant’s current team is raiding the cupboard of his former team.
The Houston Rockets are hiring Chip Engelland to serve as an assistant coach, Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Wednesday. Charania adds that Engelland is well-regarded as a player development coach and as a shooting coach.
Engelland, 65, is a cult figure who is indeed renowned for his impressive history when to comes to developing players’ shooting abilities. He has over two-and-a-half decades of experience as an NBA assistant coach, spanning stints on the Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and (most recently) the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The best work from Engelland came when he was with the Spurs from 2005-22. He was a key assistant on the San Antonio team that won NBA championships in 2007 and in 2014 and was credited with developing the likes of Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker, Dejounte Murray, and others as jump shooters.
Engelland then left to join the staff of the Thunder in 2022. Working closely with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and more, Engelland’s coaching talents help lead Oklahoma City to another championship in 2025.
Now in Houston, Engelland will be reunited with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka (who used to be a Spurs player and assistant coach himself). He will be tasked with helping improve the shooting abilities of Amen Thompson, Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, etc. and adds to what has already been an impressive summer haul for Houston.
Notable update emerges on D’Angelo Russell’s future
D’Angelo Russell is currently in Memphis … but perhaps not for long.
The Memphis Grizzlies are expected to work towards parting ways with Russell, Kelly Iko of Yahoo! Sports reported on Wednesday. Iko adds that the two sides will work together towards either a buyout or a trade of Russell.
A former NBA All-Star in 2019, Russell was acquired by the Grizzlies from the Washington Wizards earlier this month as part of a complex six-team trade. He averaged an unimpressive 10.0 points and 4.2 assists per game last season for the Dallas Mavericks and was then sent packing as part of the Anthony Davis trade with the Wizards (whom Russell never actually ended up reporting for).
Now it appears that the Grizzlies will be the second consecutive team that Russell never ultimately plays in a game for. Russell is only owed $6 million next season, so it may be easy for him to come to a buyout agreement with Memphis if no trade should materialize.
The ex-No. 2 overall draft pick Russell never really made sense for the Grizzlies in the first place as anything more than salary fodder. Memphis went 25-57 last season and are now embarking on a dedicated rebuild, meaning that Russell (at 30 years old) has virtually no utility for them.
Upon the news of his trade to the Grizzlies, Russell received plenty of savage memes online. Now the goal for Russell is to make sure that those memes do not follow him to his impending next destination.
Kirk Herbstreit makes bold prediction about Texas
The Texas Longhorns are entering a pivotal season in Steve Sarkisian’s sixth season in Austin.
The 2026 season will almost certainly be the last one for quarterback Arch Manning before he goes to the NFL, and there are big expectations for Texas.
On Wednesday, college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit had a bold claim about Texas, saying this year’s team is the best Sarkisian has had.
“I feel like Texas is incredibly talented. This will be [Steve Sarkisian’s] best team,” Herbstreit said. “But can they handle week in and week out?”

Texas will have a massive test early on against Ohio State on September 12, and the Longhorns are motivated after being left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff this past season.
CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford predicted Texas to go 11-1 this season, with the only loss coming to LSU, which would certainly have the Longhorns as an SEC title favorite.
Texas did well in the transfer portal, adding big names such as Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman, Pitt linebacker Rasheem Biles, and Arizona State running back Raleek Brown.
Steve Sarkisian hired recently fired Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops as a special assistant and brought in Will Muschamp to be the DC once again, which is the same position he held from 2008-2010.
If everything goes well, Sarkisian and Texas should have a realistic path to the College Football Playoff title.
Kendrick Perkins calls out Kevin Durant for offseason workout
Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Durant were once teammates with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but that hasn’t stopped Perkins from calling out the two-time NBA Finals MVP.
Durant has been working out this offseason with Orlando Magic star Palo Banehcero, and Perkins called Durant out for that during an episode of “NBA Today” on Tuesday.
“I’ve been seeing a video that’s been circulating of KD working out with Paolo Banchero and I appreciate the mentorship. But that’s mentorship needs to be going at the guys he’s actually going to be on the floor with this upcoming season. I wanna see videos of KD in the lab with Jabari Smith, I wanna see videos of Sengun and Kevin Durant working out,” Perkins said.

Durant’s first season with the Rockets was a mixed bag. He came to Houston as part of a massive 7-team trade involving the Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors.
The Rockets lost in the first round of the playoffs in four games to the Lakers as Durant dealt with an injury.
Perkins is hoping to see Durant work out with some of his Houston Rockets teammates instead of a star from another team. However, it is normal for NBA players to work out with others during the offseason.

Somehow, someway, the Boston Red Sox have turned things around quickly.
Just a few weeks ago, the Red Sox had one of the worst records in the American League. On Wednesday, the Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 at Fenway Park in the first game of a doubleheader. That marked the team’s 15th straight victory, tying a franchise record, and slugger Jarren Duran said it “feels normal.”

The last loss came on July 1 against the Washington Nationals, and they have now climbed to third place in the American League East and right into the thick of the AL Wild Card race.
Boston fired manager Alex Cora at the end of April after a 10-17 start, and out of nowhere, the team is now in the playoff picture.
The only other time the Red Sox won 15 games in a row was in 1946, and it marks the longest winning streak in MLB since the St. Louis Cardinals rattled off 17 in a row in 2021.

Just weeks ago, the Red Sox were expected to sell some players at the deadline, but that tune has certainly changed with the month of July producing plenty of wins in Beantown.
Sean McVay shares notable update on Aaron Donald’s possible return
The Los Angeles Rams acquired Myles Garrett, and rumors have swirled about a potential NFL return for star pass rusher Aaron Donald.
Nothing is official yet, but Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed that speculation during an interview with Jason LaCanfora of The Daily Flock podcast.
“I have crossed paths with Aaron Donald,” McVay said. “And what he’s going to do is, he is thinking about this. He’s going to go through his process. And the one thing about Aaron Donald is, what he does, he does it full speed ahead.”
The Rams sent Jared Verse and draft picks to the Cleveland Browns to acquire Garrett, essentially opening up LA’s Super Bowl window even more.
Since that trade, rumors have swirled about Donald coming out of retirement with eyes on another Super Bowl run.
Earlier in July, Donald was spotted at the Rams training facility. After the trade, Pat McAfee said Donald texted him saying that the trade got him thinking about a return, so there is plenty of smoke in regard to a reunion with LA.
Donald announced his decision to retire from the NFL in March of 2024, but he still looks to be in terrific shape and just turned 35 years old in May.
The Rams lost in the NFC Championship Game to the Seattle Seahawks but adding both Donald and Garrett would likely put them over the top in the NFC.
Adam Schefter shares intriguing text about LeBron James and the Heat
Ever since LeBron James announced that he wouldn’t return to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Miami Heat emerged as one of the favorites to land the NBA legend.
Others, including the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers – another former James team – are finalists as the NBA world still awaits the decision.
On Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter hopped on the 97.5 The Fanatic show, and he revealed a text from June 30 that signals James could be going to Miami.
“Had a text that said just be ready for LeBron to go to Miami. I can read you the exact text,” Schefter said. “‘I’m hearing Bron is coming to the Miami Heat, just want to give you a heads up. You may want to check it out.’”

Rumors swirled even more on Tuesday when the Heat accidentally posted that they have a July 27 “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference” scheduled on their YouTube page.
Although the post was deleted, it was very specific, and one Heat spokesperson said there was no validity.
James spent four seasons with the Heat, winning the first two of his four NBA titles before going back to Cleveland and then later landing in LA in a massive free agency move.
Miami acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo in a massive blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, and the thought of a James, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo Big 3 in South Beach would make things very interesting in the Eastern Conference.
NHL team trolls Heat after LeBron James’ mishap
The entire NBA world is waiting on the free agency decision for LeBron James.
On Tuesday night, fans noticed the Miami Heat’s official YouTube page. They posted a live stream scheduled for July 27 titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference.”
It was then quickly deleted in what appeared to be an accident of a drafted post in anticipation of James’ decision.
On Wednesday, one NHL team, the Winnipeg Jets, poked fun at the Heat’s massive gaffe.

It’s quite the troll from the Jets.
One spokesperson for the Heat told Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald that the post was a mistake and there was no validity to the video, although it certainly raised plenty of eyebrows regarding whether or not James is going to end up in Miami.
The Heat also posted a job opening for a Director of YouTube Strategy just hours after the snafu, so it’s quite the fallout from Miami.

As it stands, there is no timetable for a decision from LeBron James, although the finalists appear to be all of the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Philadelphia 76ers.
Report reveals Wizards’ plans for Anthony Davis
When the Washington Wizards acquired Anthony Davis in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks, questions swirled about what the future holds for th former All-Star center.
Despite Davis being linked in trade rumors this summer, the latest report suggests that Washington wants to keep him around for the long-term, according to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype.
“With fellow star Anthony Davis extension-eligible August 6th, the Wizards plan to have extension talks with the 33-year-old, 10-time All-Star forward, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.
NBA insider Marc Spears reported previously that the Wizards have “no plans” to trade Davis, and now the team is eyeing an extension with the veteran big man.
The Mavericks acquired Davis in th stunning trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, and Dallas sent Davis to Washington during the latest deadline in a move involving plenty of players and picks.

The Wizards also selected BYU star AJ Dybantsa with the first overall pick in 2026, and they acquired Trae Young in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks prior to landing Davis.
Washington then gave Young a whopping four-year, $212 million deal, so the Wizards are not shying away from spending money in hopes of making their first playoff appearance since the 2020-21 season.
Davis has battled injuries over the past few years, so it remains to be seen what an extension would look like, but it doesn’t look like he is leaving the nation’s capital.
Nuggets reportedly have rebuffed trade interest in one key player
The Denver Nuggets are hoping to make another run to the NBA Finals with the pairing if Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.
One player who has been drawing trade interest this offseason is Cam Johnson, but the latest reports stated that the Nuggets are hesitatnto move on from Johnson.
“Numerous teams have called the Denver Nuggets hoping they’d be willing to dump forward Cam Johnson, who’s owed $23.06 million in the final year of his contract, but those inquiries have been rebuffed,” according to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype.
The Nuggets acquired Johnson last summer in the deal that sent Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets. In April, Johnson was named as one player who could be traded, but the latest stance points to Denver holding him for the final year of his current contract.
Johnson was selected at No. 11 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, and he played the first four seasons with the Phoenix Suns before going to the Nets.
In Johnson’s first season in Denver, he had career-highs in three-point shooting (43%) and field goal percentage (48%) despite playing just 54 games due to injuries.
Still, the Nuggets finished with the third seed in the Western Conference but lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games in the first round.
At this moment, the Nuggets don’t want to just dump Cam Johnson, but would prefer to hold him in hopes of another playoff run this season.
Lakers were among teams interested in Lu Dort before Hawks trade
The Oklahoma City Thunder made a bit of a surprising decision to trade Lu Dort to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal.
Dort went to Atlanta, with Oklahoma City receiving three second-round picks and former No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher going from the Hawks to the Dallas Mavericks.
Dort’s name had been mentioned in trade rumors, and four teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, were in on a potential deal, according to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype.
“Several teams expressed trade interest in acquiring Dort before he was traded to Atlanta, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, and Miami Heat, league sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote.
The Thunder moved Dort and his expiring $17.22 million contract because OKC has to pay some of their other stars.
As for the Lakers, acquiring Dort would’ve been a major move, especially since LA needs some defense with Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic together in the backcourt.
The Miami Heat figure to be waiting for a decision regarding LeBron James, and the Raptors acquired Kawhi Leonard before the NBA paused the transaction as they wait for the conclusion of the Aspiration investigation.
The Lakers did sign wing Matisse Thybulle to a one-year deal, and he plays excellent defense, but the thought of adding Dort to a team with Reaves, Doncic and Walker Kessler would’ve been a fun group for JJ Redick to work with.
Report reveals what it would take to trade for Tarik Skubal
Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is expected to be the top starter available at this year’s MLB trade deadline.
The Tigers have been back and forth on trading Skubal, but MLB insiders Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic revealed what it would take for a team to land Skubal.
“The way they would do it, according to two rival executives briefed on the Tigers’ thinking, is by trading Skubal for a controllable starting pitcher plus quality prospects. The starter would replace Skubal in the rotation, backfilling his innings but almost certainly providing lesser performance,” they wrote.
Skubal himself admitted he has “zero appetite” to be traded at the deadline, but if the Tigers get a gigantic offer, it might make sense to move him and bring back assets in return.
Jon Heyman recently named the Chicago Cubs as his top suitor for a Skubal trade, but The Athletic didn’t mention the Cubs in this piece.
The Tampa Bay Rays have also emerged as a team interested in Tarik Skubal in a bit of a surprising twist, so there are going to be plenty of teams interested in the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.
Entering Wednesday, the Tigers are five games back of an American League Wild Card spot, so the next few days could decide whether or not they decide to buy or sell ahead of the August 3 deadline.
Royals acquire relief pitcher in trade with Astros
The MLB trade deadline is on August 3, but the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros are getting a head start.
On Wednesday, the Astros and Royals agreed to a trade that will send relief pitcher Nate Pearson to Kansas City, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

The Astros recently DFA’d Pearson, and days later, they wind up sending him to the Royals. In exchange, the Astros are acquiring High-A pitcher Max Martin, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com.
Pearson was selected at No. 28 overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2017 MLB June Amateur Draft. He spent the first four seasons of his career with Toronto before going to the Chicago Cubs in 2024.
Pearson played for the Cubs in 2025 before joining the Astros in 2026. He appeared in 16 games for Houston, registering an 0-1 record with a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings pitched.
The Astros entered Wednesday with a 49-54 record, which means they are expected to be sellers at the deadline. There is a scenario where Houston moves slugger Yordan Alvarez, although it would need to be a large return to send away the All-Star.
The Royals, meanwhile, are 42-60 and have one of the worst records in all of baseball, so this just feels like a depth addition for Kansas City as they look ahead to the future.
Austin Rivers had the most vicious ankle-breaker on a young camper
Austin Rivers reminded some young hoopers why he’s got one of the most awesome mixtapes ever.
The former Duke Blue Devils star recently pulled up at Flow Shooting Academy in Orlando, Fla., and proved that he very much still has it.
His lightning-quick first step, shooting touch and, most importantly, ability to break ankles were all on display in one of the most savage crossover videos in recent memory.
After accepting a challenge from a camper, Rivers took a few jab steps before putting the ball on the floor and letting the defender fully commit. He then stopped on a dime, sending the camper cartoonishly hurtling across the floor. Rivers made sure to finish the play, swishing the jumper before turning his back and seemingly laughing at what he had just done to the camper.

Rivers also pulled it off while wearing a pair of loafers, a flex that further underscored the huge difference between a true pro and a regular hooper. Imagine what he might have done in a pair of basketball shoes.
Rivers might not have become a superstar in the NBA, but he can still look like one when matched up against random hoopers brave enough to risk their ankles.
Dustin Poirier calls sponsor’s product ‘poison’ after contract termination
Down goes at least one sponsor for former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier.
In a recent appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” Poirier revealed that his deal with Bud Light was terminated following his controversial airport incident in June.
However, Poirier does not seem to be too bothered by it despite admitting that the voided deal cost him ” a few hundred thousand dollars.”
“They terminated my contract immediately,” Poirier told Helwani. “It’s all good. I don’t need that f–king poison in my life. It sucks that my family loses out on the money I had left on the deal with them, which is a few hundred thousand dollars. But also, if I’m representing something, if I’m advertising something that I’m not going to be taking part in, promoting stuff. It is what it is.”
The 37-year-old Poirier was arrested last month at the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Ga., for public intoxication.
A video of the arrest later went viral, showing the former UFC star confronting airport employees and behaving aggressively toward a police officer. Poirier was released on bail and has since tried to stay sober, and a split with Bud Light could make it easier for him to stay away from alcohol.
Poirier retired in 2025 after losing his bout against Max Holloway at UFC 318.

The new Northwestern Wildcats offensive coordinator was among those in attendance at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill., as the stadium undergoes the final phases of its renovation, and he made sure to follow all safety protocols.
The 62-year-old Kelly addressed the media on the field while wearing a hard hat and a construction vest. The only thing missing, perhaps, was a rolled-up blueprint of the stadium tucked under one of his arms.

But Kelly’s real work does not involve operating a crane, but rather helping Northwestern establish a quality offense.
He will be in charge of the Wildcats’ attack that finished 108th in the nation last season with an average of 185.9 passing yards per game, 65th with 160.2 rushing yards per outing and 104th with 23.4 points per contest.
Kelly was hired by Northwestern in December, returning to the college ranks after a 2025 stint as the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator. Before that, he served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the national championship-winning Ohio State Buckeyes during the 2024 season.
Alleged photo of Puka Nacua’s bite mark on woman suing him emerges
A new photo of Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Puka Nacua’s alleged bite mark on a woman has been released by her attorney.
Madison Attiabi’s attorney, Joseph Kar, shared the photo with the California Post on Tuesday. This time, the image is in color, providing a clearer sense of the alleged bite’s severity. It depicts a circular imprint of several teeth on Atiabi’s back. You can see the photo here.
Additionally, Kar said that his client had to receive a tetanus shot after getting allegedly bitten by the two-time Pro Bowler.
“I don’t know if you know,” Kar said, “but the mouth is one of the dirtiest places on the planet given the amount of bacteria we have as humans.
“My client has also suffered severe emotional distress and mental anguish and is being treated.”
Attiabi filed a lawsuit against Nacua in January, following the bite that took place on New Year’s Eve.
Nacua’s attorney, Levi McCathern, has since emphatically denied the allegations, insisting that what happened between Nacua and Attiabi was the result of mere “horseplay”.
Nacua checked into rehab in March, but McCathern said it was not related to the lawsuit.
It remains to be seen whether the Rams will take any action regarding the ongoing situation involving Nacua, though Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay has already voiced his support for the wide receiver while he was in rehab.
