Arike Ogunbowale gets last laugh with Geno Auriemma
Arike Ogunbowale definitely got the last laugh in a small battle with Geno Auriemma.
Ogunbowale hit the winning shot in the national championship game against Mississippi State on Sunday to give Notre Dame their second national title. She also made a clutch shot in their previous game to send them to the championship.
Ogunbowale was named Most Outstanding Player in the tournament, and she showed that you can win a title in women’s college basketball without going to UConn, which is an important point.
Back in 2014, Ogunbowale tweeted her five final schools she was considering in recruitment. That group included Louisville, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA and Wisconsin. She didn’t even have UConn in her top five. That seemingly didn’t sit well with Auriemma, the famous UConn coach. Back when he had Twitter, he tweeted what seemed to be a response shortly after Ogunbowale’s tweet. He said “stay tuned for my list of the 5 players I saw the past 7 days that I have zero interest in recruiting …”

Auriemma later got rid of Twitter, perhaps to save himself from sending snarky tweets like that one. That wasn’t his best moment, and it probably felt good for Ogunbowale to win it all without playing for the Huskies.
