Virginia Tech kicks player off team over gambling matter

Virginia Tech’s biggest offseason addition has been kicked off the team.

The Hokies’ men’s basketball program announced on Wednesday that Hysier Miller has been “permanently released” from the program. The school issued a statement saying the move was “due to circumstances prior to Miller’s enrollment at Virginia Tech.”

“Temple transfer point guard Hysier Miller has been permanently released from the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program due to circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech. There will be no further comment by the university on this matter,” the school said in a statement.

The circumstances surrounding Miller occurred when he was at Temple.

Miller, who is from Philadelphia, Pa., played three seasons at Temple and was a starter the last two years. The Owls were investigated for unusual betting activity surrounding their games.

In March, some Temple games were flagged due to suspicious betting activity. In one game, Temple went from being a being a 1.5-point underdog to closing as an 8-point underdog against UAB. That point-spread swing occurred in the same day. The Owls ended up losing that game by 28 points. That was the second straight game that Temple did not come close to covering the spread.

SI reporter Pat Forde says that Miller’s release from Virginia Tech is related to the gambling matter.

Sources: Virginia Tech guard Hysier Miller, a transfer from Temple, is no longer with the program. This relates to the Temple gambling inquiry that was underway last March, as @SInow reported at the time: https://t.co/n56N7Upew8

Miller averaged 15.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.8 steals per game as a junior last season.
