Report: Greg Schiano will not return as Ohio State DC

Greg Schiano

Greg Schiano appears to be out as Ohio State defensive coordinator.

According to Marc Givler of BuckeyeGrove.com, Schiano will not return to the Buckeyes in 2019 under new head coach Ryan Day. It’s not clear whose decision it was, only that the former Rutgers coach will not return to his role for a fourth season.

Interestingly, the report also states that the Buckeyes are eyeing Greg Mattison, currently the defensive line coach at archrival Michigan, as a potential replacement for Schiano. With co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch leaving for an assistant role at Oklahoma, Day will have to make multiple hires to his new defensive staff.

A little over a year ago, Schiano was poised to become the next head coach at Tennessee before that was scuttled by fan outcry. Now he’s out of a job. Perhaps a lower-profile head coaching job is in his immediate future.
