Ohio State benefited from two bad calls by the referees in their 31-24 double-overtime win over Penn State in Happy Valley on Saturday night.
On Penn State’s first offensive possession of the game, Christian Hackenberg threw a pass on 1st-and-10 from the Nittany Lions’ 36 that was broken up by Vonn Bell. The ball clearly bounced before Bell landed on top of it, but the officials ruled it an interception on the field and did not overturn it after a review. The excellent field position helped Ohio State get their first touchdown of the game and a 7-0 lead.

The Buckeyes also benefited from a missed call on a field goal in their first possession of the second quarter.

Ohio State had the ball for a 4th-and-25 and made a 49-yard field goal to go up 10-0. However, officials missed that the play clock expired prior to the snap. They should have been penalized five yards for delay of game, giving them a more difficult 54-yard attempt.

Both teams were held under 300 yards of offense and struggled to score. Those points that the referees helped the Buckeyes get were key.
