49ers GM: Jimmy Garoppolo’s torn ACL recovery has been ‘flawless’

Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo’s recovery from a torn ACL is the leading storyline in San Francisco 49ers training camp. According to general manager John Lynch, the recovery really could not have gone better.

“I’m hesitant and reluctant to say it, (but) the recovery from the knee (injury) has been flawless,” Lynch said Saturday, via The Athletic’s Matt Barrows.

Those words sound great, but they may not be comforting to 49ers fans after seeing what happened on Monday night.

Playing in his first game since suffering a torn ACL in Week 3 last year, Garoppolo went just 1/6 for 0 yards and an interception against the Denver Broncos. The 27-year-old acknowledged his preseason debut left him “a little frustrated.”

Garoppolo has played in nine games since being acquired by the 49ers in a 2017 trade with the Patriots. He’s appeared in 26 games since the Pats made him a second-round pick in 2014. He’s thrown for 17 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
