Brandon Weeden upset with media over receiver route comments

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden was upset with some writers/media outlets for indicating that he had called out his coaches during the week.

Weededn made some high throws during overtime of last weekend’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. This week he reportedly lamented that the team ran some routes in the extra period that they hadn’t run during the week.

“There’s a couple of routes we ran on Sunday for the first time all week and that’s not fair to me, it’s not fair to the receivers, it’s not fair to any of us, because when you’re getting thrown in the fire and the bullets are flying …” Weeden said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer before trailing off.

Head coach Pat Shurmur disagreed with Weeden.

“I disagree with some of that because I do think that we make an effort of the ones we’re going to call we practice. A lot of the plays that we practice, we’ve been running all year and you run them in training camp. It’s nearly impossible with the amount of time and then the length of the season to practice every single thing multiple times.”

Weeden acknowledged that it’s nearly impossible to run all the routes during a practice week because they need to keep their players fresh. His comments were picked up by Pro Football Talk, which caused a string of reactions.

Around the Horn’s Bomani Jones tweeted that Weeden appeared to call out his coaches, leading to a response from the Browns QB.

@bomani_jones No not even a little bit. Not my intention at all. They took what I said out of context and ran with it. Listen to it all…

He also responded to an article tweeted out by the NFL on FOX that framed his comments as calling out the team’s playcalling.

@nflonfox Our play calling has been great all year… Wasn’t what was said AT ALL… Not even on the same topic…

He then topped it all off with this tweet that blames the media:

VERY Frustrating! RT @codyelms: Gotta love the media twisting @bweeden3 quotes

I wasn’t there when Weeden made his comments, so I don’t know the full context, but it sure sounded to me like he wasn’t happy with something about the playcalling in the overtime period. I’m guessing that’s not the message he wants out there, and that’s probably why he responded to a few people over Twitter.

He needs to be more careful with his comments in the future and really should be more focused on what he’s doing rather than what other people are tweeting and writing.
