Gary Kubiak: I made a bad decision by playing Peyton Manning

Gary Kubiak Broncos

Gary Kubiak is doing his quarterback a solid by falling on the sword and taking the blame for Peyton Manning’s terrible game on Sunday that led to a benching.

The Denver Broncos head coach said after his team’s 29-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that he made a bad decision by playing Manning, who was 5-of-20 for 35 yards and four interceptions before getting benched.

“I’m disappointed in myself. … I probably should have made the decision not to play (Manning),” Kubiak said via The Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala.

Manning apparently had a rib injury, as that was added to his injury report on Saturday.

Manning was listed on the injury report for both a foot and rib injury. He thought he could play despite the issues.

“I thought I felt good enough to play. Maybe that was a false feeling or wrong feeling,” Manning said via Jhabvala.

Manning is the quarterback and leader of the Broncos. The guy likes to make every effort possible to play, so it’s understandable why he gave it a go Sunday. It’s also understandable why Kubiak let his future Hall of Famer try to grit it out rather than play Brock Osweiler, who threw for 146 yards and a touchdown in relief. Maybe Kubiak should have just pulled the trigger on Manning earlier, but we don’t fault him for letting Manning start.

Kubiak also said in his postgame news conference that Manning will remain the team’s starter so long as he’s healthy.
