Phil Simms: It will be hard for Tim Tebow to ever be an NFL starter

Things may have gone horribly for Tim Tebow during his time with the New York Jets thus far, but he is still a competitor. Tebow is only 25 years old and led the Denver Broncos to a postseason berth and a first-round playoff win last year. Make no mistake about it — he still wants to start.

After being given basically zero chance to prove himself in New York this past season, Tebow is sure to have trouble finding a team that is willing to bring him on board as a starting quarterback. During an appearance on “The Late Show” with David Letterman Monday night, Phil Simms wondered if Tebow will ever get another opportunity.

“It’s going to be hard for him to ever be a starter,” Simms said according to Eye on Football. “When you bring in Tim Tebow, you have to know what comes with him. If you have a starting quarterback, like the Jets did in Mark Sanchez, they’re worried about him and they’re paying him a lot of money. When you bring Tim Tebow in, it brings a lot more focus and his fan base, and it creates a controversy no matter what.”

Last month, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that it is a “virtual certainty” that Tebow will sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars if and when the Jets release him. Jags general manager David Caldwell said Tebow is not in the team’s plans, but it should be noted that NFL rules prohibit him from speaking about players who are under contract with other teams.

Even if Tebow is given another chance to start, it will likely be with a team like Jacksonville that has trouble selling tickets. There’s no denying that the former Florida Gator has an incredible following, which will always make him a draw to owners. At the moment, I doubt Tebow cares about the reasons why teams would be interested in his services. All he wants is another chance.
