Todd Gurley’s workload has been up and down all season, with little explanation behind it. It doesn’t sound like Sean McVay is about to offer one, either.
On Wednesday, McVay admitted that Gurley’s production has varied, adding that much of it is “not exclusive to what [Gurley] can control.”
McVay on Gurley's season: "There's been some different reasons why the production is what it is – and a large part not exclusive to what he can control."

Gurley, of course, has had lingering left knee issues for a while now. The Rams have been very careful about his workload, even when he’s producing. He’s gotten 20 or more carries on just two occasions this season, and he’s down to 3.9 yards per carry, a full yard less than last season.
What can Gurley do to change it? Not much. Things like game script matter too, but the Rams don’t want Gurley getting hurt. He’s going to have games where he can’t get it going and they go away from him. McVay sounds like he’d like to reward Gurley with more usage to reward his production, but the running back’s health comes first, even if he’s looked perfectly fine lately.
