A Dallas Mavericks assistant coach was arrested Saturday for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Darrell Armstrong, a longtime Mavericks assistant, was arrested early Saturday morning, according to Zachary Yanes of WFAA. Dallas police allege that Armstrong struck a woman with a gun during an argument and threatened to shoot her.
Armstrong was booked into jail and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has since posted bond, which had been set at $35,000.

In a statement to WFAA, the Mavericks confirmed that Armstrong had been placed on administrative suspension as the organization investigates the allegations.
“The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident,” the team said in a statement. “We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing.”
Armstrong joined the Mavericks as an assistant coach in 2009 as a member of Rick Carlisle’s staff. Jason Kidd retained Armstrong when he replaced Carlisle in 2021.
In addition to his coaching career, Armstrong played 14 seasons as a point guard in the NBA, most prominently with the Orlando Magic. He was named both Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Player in 1998-99.
The Mavericks’ coaching staff is a bit thin right now. In addition to Armstrong being suspended, another assistant recently left the team following the Luka Doncic trade.
