Maria Sharapova has spoken openly in the past about not having many close friends in women’s tennis, so you probably could have guessed how her peers would react when the five-time major champion was busted for using a banned substance at the Australian Open.
While most players in the Women’s Tennis Association have offered no comment about Sharapova, Dominika Cibulkova had no problem unloading on her. In an interview in her home country of Slovakia, Cibulkova called Sharapova an “unlikeable person.”
“I didn’t make any statement, as I didn’t want to be the only person to openly say what they think about this case. I will only say that I don’t feel sorry at all for Sharapova and I don’t miss her on the tour,” Cibulkova said, according to a translation from the NZ Herald. “She’s a totally unlikeable person. Arrogant, conceited and cold. When I sit beside her in the locker room, she won’t even say hello.”
Cibulkova is almost certainly not the only player who feels that way. Women’s tennis legend Chris Evert recently said that Sharapova has “isolated herself” from others in the sport and does not seem to have any close relationships with other players.
