Seth Smith was trending on Twitter and had no idea what that meant

A’s DH Seth Smith was one of the heroes in Oakland’s comeback win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 4 on Wednesday night. The DH’s two-run double tied the game at three, and apparently was enough to get his name trending on Twitter.

The 30-year-old must be unfamiliar with the social networking service, because he turned to resident A’s Twitter expert Brandon McCarthy to find out the significance of the feat:

McCarthy shared the screen shot you see above of a text message received from Smith via his Twitter account. It must be odd for McCarthy’s 89,000 followers to learn that someone doesn’t know what it means to be “trending,” but nobody will hold that against Smith.

If Smith ever decides to get involved with Twitter, McCarthy would be an excellent person to learn from.

For now, we’ll let Smith stick to what he does best: crushing baseballs. Here’s video of his clutch hit in the 9th:
