Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was called out on strikes by umpire Rob Drake Tuesday night and he went crazy. The outburst will likely draw a fine and suspension because Molina made contact with Drake several times. He was raging so hard even some of his spit ended up on the umpire’s face. The announcers on Fox Sports Wisconsin (Brewers TV) went overboard going after Yadier. Molina didn’t intentionally spit on Drake, he just went nuts and his spit landed on the ump. By contrast, if you watch the call from Fox Sports Midwest (Cardinals TV) posted by Timothy Burke at Sports Grid, those announcers had their heads in the sand. They were taking the “hear no evil see no evil” approach and didn’t provide an honest call.
The bottom line is that Yadier Molina went crazy on the umpire and will get fined and suspended for his actions. We should also give credit to umpire Rob Drake for maintaining his composure; that was not an easy situation to manage yet he remained calm.
Having to play Gerald Laird a few extra games because of a suspension is the last thing St. Louis needs in the middle of an NL Central chase. Nice going, Yadier.
