Update emerges on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s brothers after blockbuster trade

June 26, 2026 by Darryn Albert
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The Miami Heat will not have to pay any further tax for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Miami will not be taking on any of Antetokounmpo’s brothers, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported Friday on “Mason & Ireland.” Despite Antetokounmpo playing with his brothers on the Milwaukee Bucks, Shelburne says that will not be continuing on the Heat.

Last week, the Heat made a major blockbuster trade for the former NBA MVP Antetokounmpo. They also took on Antetokounmpo’s longtime Bucks teammate Bobby Portis in the deal and had to send out four players and several other draft assets to Milwaukee in return.

Giannis’ older brother Thanasis played with him for six total seasons on the Bucks, and they even won an NBA championship together in 2021. Younger brother Alex then joined the fun last season on the Milwaukee roster, meaning that the Bucks had three Antetokounmpo brothers on their team at one point.

One interested trade suitor for Giannis was said to have been turned off by the possibility of having to take on the brothers as well. Everyone even joked in the aftermath of Giannis’ trade to the Heat that Miami might now have to bring in Thanasis and Alex too.

But the Heat famously run a tight ship where no one player is bigger than the organization (even LeBron James was largely unable to dictate moves during his stint in Miami from 2010-14). As such, any efforts by the 10-time All-Star Antetokounmpo to bring his less-skilled brothers into the mix with the Heat will apparently be dead on arrival.

Mavericks get bittersweet update on Dereck Lively II

June 26, 2026 by Renzo Pocholo Salao
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II is progressing in his injury recovery — but probably not at the rate most fans would hope for.

Lively missed the final 65 games of the Mavericks’ 2025-26 season and only played in seven games total due to a lingering foot injury. He underwent season-ending surgery in December that ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

The 22-year-old center has reportedly shed the walking boot that he’s worn for most of the year. But according to The Athletic’s Christian Clark, Lively “still hasn’t progressed” to workouts that involve running.

“I’m taking my time,” Lively told Clark. “I’m taking even more time than I need to make sure I don’t ever have to deal with this foot again. So whenever I can get past that, get over this hill, I know I’ll be stress-free.”

The hope for Mavericks fans is that the team and Lively himself have taken an ultra-conservative approach, given Dallas’ full-on rebuild initiated last season. However, the concern regarding Lively’s availability going forward is only growing.

Lively played only 43 games combined over the last two seasons. He suffered a stress fracture in his right ankle in January 2025 that limited him to just 36 games during his sophomore campaign — one of several injuries that doomed Nico Harrison’s failed post-Luka Doncic experiment.

Lively is arguably the Mavericks’ only other foundational piece heading into next season aside from Cooper Flagg. With Dallas not owning its 2027 first-round pick, having Lively on the floor next season will be crucial in an ever-competitive Western Conference.

Angels make a major firing amid their latest awful season

June 26, 2026 by Darryn Albert
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The Los Angeles Angels have found their latest scapegoat.

The Angels have officially fired general manager Perry Minasian, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN reported on Friday. Gonzalez adds that the Angels are now bringing in former St. Louis Cardinals lead executive John Mozeliak as a consultant as they embark on a search for a new GM.

Minasian, who was in the last year of his contract, had served as general manager of the Angels since 2020. But as has been the story of the franchise for quite some time now, the Angels failed to produce a single playoff berth or even a single winning season over that entire span.

Now the owners of MLB’s longest active playoff drought (since 2014), the Angels are once again in the gutter this year. They are tied for the worst record in the American League at 34-48, effectively ending the season in Anaheim before the calendar has even flipped to July.

Minasian clearly was not faultless in the Angels’ continued struggles. Under Minasian’s leadership, the team made ill-fated trades for Jorge Soler, Lucas Giolito, and others, took questionable swings on free agents like Jose Quintana and Robert Stephenson, and most damningly, held onto superstar Shohei Ohtani until Ohtani walked for nothing in free agency after the 2023 season.

But the Angels’ single biggest problem is still the meddling and penny-pinching ways of owner Arte Moreno. The 79-year-old Moreno is now looking for his sixth full-time general manager ever since taking over the team, and the Angels also have dysfunction in plenty of other areas right now (including at the manager position).

Report: 1 Red Sox player is causing internal frustration

June 26, 2026 by Darryn Albert
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The vibes continue to stink for the AL East-worst Boston Red Sox.

Boston shortstop Marcelo Mayer has some detractors within the organization, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reported on Friday. Mayer has reportedly been causing frustration due to his supposedly-lacking mental toughness and his alleged tendency to withdraw during hitting slumps.

Additionally, McAdam notes that some in the organization have also questioned Mayer’s ability to make himself available through day-to-day minor physical setbacks. You can read McAdam’s full report on the situation here.

This news comes as Mayer was officially placed on the injured list by the Red Sox earlier in the day Friday. Mayer has been dealing with a lingering bone stress reaction to the ulna in his left arm and was previously playing through the issue with occasional maintenance days off.

The lefty-hitting Mayer, still only 23 years old, was Boston’s No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He debuted for the big-league team in 2025 but has come along slowly and is hitting just .220 with three home runs and 22 RBIs through 70 total games played this season.

Just last month, Mayer was also in focus after butting heads with Red Sox teammate Willson Contreras after a game. That said, Boston has the third-worst record in the AL this season at 33-46, so their issues right now clearly run much deeper than Mayer’s maturity.

Celtics give a notable job to Jayson Tatum’s close friend

June 26, 2026 by Darryn Albert
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The Boston Celtics may be looking to trade away Jaylen Brown, but they are still very much committed to their other star player.

Boston has decided to tab Amile Jefferson as the head coach of their Summer League team, Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe reported on Friday. Jefferson will take the reins for the Celtics as they kick off Summer League play next month.

The 33-year-old Jefferson is a very familiar figure to Boston star forward Jayson Tatum. Jefferson played at Duke University from 2012-17 and overlapped with Tatum during that final season in 2016-17, becoming close friends with the future six-time NBA All-Star. A former power forward, Jefferson even served as Tatum’s mentor during their time together with the Blue Devils.

Jefferson had a brief playing career in the pros, including on a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic from 2018-20. He then went into coaching in 2022 and was already hired by the Celtics as an assistant under head coach Joe Mazzulla in 2023.

Notably, Jefferson was a member of the coaching staff that guided Boston to an NBA championship in 2024. Now Jefferson is moving up the ranks again by landing a gig as the team’s new Summer League head coach.

Jefferson’s name was in the news a couple of years ago after an unfortunate burglary at his home. But the former NCAA champion is still doing very nicely for himself and is well on his way to becoming a future NBA head coach candidate some time down the line.

Dwyane Wade’s son Zaire arrested on a felony domestic violence charge

June 26, 2026 by Darryn Albert
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Zaire Wade has gotten himself into some trouble with the law.

Zaire, the son of retired Basketball Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade, was arrested on Sunday in Burbank, Calif. NBC4 Los Angeles reports that Burbank police were called to a home around 5:30 AM on Sunday morning after receiving a 911 call about a woman screaming.

Police reportedly arrived at the home and found Zaire along with a woman who had lacerations on her face and body. After conducting an investigation, police arrested Zaire on three charges — felony domestic violence, criminal threats, and false imprisonment.

NBC4 Los Angeles also adds that police issued an emergency protective order and that a handgun was taken from the house after the arrest. You can read their full report on the situation here.

Zaire, 24, is the eldest son of the Miami Heat legend Dwyane (whom Dwyane shares with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches). Standing 6-foot-3, Zaire is also a former professional basketball player who previously attended Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, Calif. before transferring to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.

Instead of attending college, Zaire opted to turn pro in 2021. He was selected in that year’s NBA G League Draft by the Salt Lake City Stars, a move that sparked controversy as Dwyane is a part-owner of the Utah Jazz, the NBA affiliate of the Stars. The backlash over the Zaire pick even drew a response at one point from LeBron James.

Since then, Zaire has had some brief stints playing overseas. He suited up in 2023 for the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) and last played in 2024 for the Macau Black Bears of The Asian Tournament (TAT).

Knicks are re-signing 1 key player from their championship team

June 26, 2026 by Darryn Albert
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The New York Knicks are officially giving it another go with Grand Theft.

Knicks guard Jose Alvarado is finalizing a new three-year, $14-plus million contract to return to the team, Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Friday. Charania adds that Alvarado is declining his $4.5 million player option for next season in order to facilitate the new deal.

The 28-year-old Alvarado, a former undrafted player, arrived on the Knicks in a February trade with the New Orleans Pelicans. He had a limited role off the bench for the team during the regular season but proved to be a difference-maker down the stretch of their NBA championship run.

Alvarado came alive in the playoffs, shooting 35.3 percent from 3 and providing much-needed relief at point guard whenever star player Jalen Brunson had to sit. On top of that, Alvarado helped facilitate the Knicks’ historic 29-point comeback against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Playing alongside Brunson down the stretch of the second half, Alvarado was crucial to the comeback by providing the Knicks with another ball-handler and three-point shooter to help change the anatomy of the game.

Though he is only securing a marginal increase in pay after his impressive postseason, Alvarado is at least getting some longer-term security to remain with the Knicks. Also notably a native of New York, Alvarado gets the added benefit of being able to stay home.

That said, some other members of the Knicks’ 2026 championship team might not be as lucky. We just heard earlier this week that two notable Knicks are not expected to be back next season.

Bryce Harper addresses his gesture toward Nationals fans

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Bryce Harper’s gesture toward Washington Nationals fans was not what it looked like, so he says.

Harper appeared to flip off Nationals fans after hitting a home run during the ninth inning of Thursday’s game against the Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The Philadelphia Phillies first baseman tried to say after the game, however, that his actions were misinterpreted, and he was actually flashing his ring finger.

“Ring finger. Just make sure that’s out there,” Harper told reporters after the game.

Bryce Harper wants people to know it was his ring finger that he flashed at Nationals fans who were chirping him all week

"It's weird coming from a fanbase that I sweated for for seven years." pic.twitter.com/SvtPEQMtQM

— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) June 26, 2026

Video of the moment shows that Harper is actually telling the truth, though it’s very hard to tell, and seeing it as a more vulgar gesture is just a logical reaction. The context helps drive that point home, as Harper had been hearing some crude chants from Nationals fans all game.

The gesture probably doesn’t sting Nationals fans as much as Harper wishes it would. He still has yet to win a World Series in his career, while the Nationals won one in 2019, the year after Harper departed for Philadelphia. With that in mind, it’s not entirely clear what message Harper was hoping to send.

Nationals fans have never really forgiven Harper for his departure, while Harper himself still has some lingering hard feelings toward the organization. At this point, neither side seems interested in letting that hostility fade, even after six years.

Mitchell Robinson linked to Knicks rival in free agency

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Mitchell Robinson appears all but certain to leave the Knicks, but he might not have to leave New York.

The Brooklyn Nets have early interest in Robinson, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. The center is set to become an unrestricted free agent on June 30.

There are going to be a host of centers varying between quasi-available and very available. After watching Mitchell Robinson win a ring across the river with the #Knicks, Brooklyn has interest in the free agent rebounder according to @TheSteinLine. #Nets

— Brian Lewis (@NYPost_Lewis) June 26, 2026

Robinson is in line for a big payday this summer, but the Knicks cannot afford to give it to him without moving into the second apron. That more or less rules out a return to his former team, no matter how much they might want him back.

The Nets, meanwhile, appear determined to try to take some steps forward this offseason. They have already brought in Julius Randle via trade, and Robinson would provide them with a defensive anchor on the interior. He and Randle are former Knicks teammates as well.

Robinson has primarily been a sixth man for the Knicks, but there is no doubting his defensive capabilities. He averaged 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game last season, and only his free throw struggles have kept him from a larger role. The Nets might be willing to give it to him anyway.

Former MVP wants the Mets manager job

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The New York Mets do not have any plans to hire a new manager right now, but one of the game’s biggest stars is reportedly interested in the position.

Albert Pujols has told friends that he would like the Mets manager job if and when Carlos Mendoza was fired, according to John Harper of SNY. Notably, Pujols is known to have a good relationship with Mets star Juan Soto.

Heard from a source today that Albert Pujols in recent weeks had let friends know he'd very much want the Mets' manager job if and when they moved on from Mendoza. Pujols managed DR team in WBC, has a very strong relationship with Soto.

— John Harper (@NYNJHarper) June 26, 2026

The Mets did fire Mendoza on Friday, but they do not appear to be in any hurry to choose a permanent replacement. Andy Green was named interim manager, and the team indicated that would remain the case until the end of the 2026 season.

Pujols has long sought to get involved in managing. He has done so in the Dominican Winter League and managed the Dominican Republic during the most recent World Baseball Classic. There were reports that he was close to landing an MLB job this past offseason, but that did not come to fruition.

Despite their rough season, the Mets job should be attractive given the talent on the team and the resources available. Pujols might face stiff competition, but he is a big and well-respected name, and that alone should be enough to get him some consideration.

Brendan Sorsby has been rejected by another football league

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Brendan Sorsby might just be out of options when it comes to playing football competitively in 2026.

The CFL said Friday that teams would not be allowed to add the former Texas Tech quarterback to their negotiating list. In a statement to Paul Myerberg of USA Today, the league said the gambling allegations against Sorsby were concerning, and warrant his exclusion from the league for the time being.

“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning,” the statement said. “At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”

In other words, Sorsby will not be permitted to play in the CFL, at least for this season. It had been mentioned as a potential alternative for him after the NFL informed him that no supplemental draft would be held this year. The CFL often serves as a landing spot for quarterbacks who, for whatever reason, fail to catch on in the NFL, and the fact that they will not even consider Sorsby speaks to the serious concerns about gambling that leagues have.

Sorsby sought to enter the NFL after a legal battle over his eligibility following the revelation that he placed numerous bets, including some on his own team. He has threatened legal action against the NFL over their decision not to hold a supplemental draft.

Celtics set ridiculous asking price in Jaylen Brown trade talks

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Teams that have tried to ask the Boston Celtics about Jaylen Brown do not appear to be getting very far.

The Minnesota Timberwolves explored the possibility of trading for Brown before ultimately getting LaMelo Ball earlier this week. According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, the Celtics requested a package including Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid, and a similar package of picks that the Timberwolves wound up trading for Ball.

The Timberwolves, naturally, balked at that, and traded for Ball instead while keeping Gobert.

Brown certainly seems to be available, but the Celtics are not desperately trying to trade him. They were willing to swap him for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but that is obviously a unique case involving a franchise player. Perhaps it was simply meant to start negotiations, but the Timberwolves were asked for essentially two starters, one of them an elite defender, and a big parcel of picks to give up Brown.

Despite the apparently steep asking price, Brown continues to draw interest. The latest rumor involving him would see him traded in exchange for a young NBA All-Star.

Tennessee parts ways with $2 million transfer

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke

The Tennessee Volunteers are parting way with a $2 million transfer before he ever played a game for the program.

Penn State transfer Chaz Coleman is leaving Tennessee, according to multiple reports. Pete Nakos and Chris Low of On3 reported that Coleman has been “medically disqualified.”

— On3 (@On3) June 26, 2026

Coleman has dealt with homesickness and the pressure of the financial investment in him since April, which manifested as physical symptoms, according to Chris Hummer of CBS Sports. He also had issues with tardiness and engagement levels, though the team attributed most of these issues to an off-field situation.

A much-heralded transfer from Penn State, Coleman collected three sacks in nine games for the Nittany Lions last year. The Vols offered him a reported $2 million in the transfer portal and expected him to be a crucial part of their defense this season.

Tennessee has had rough luck with transfers in recent years, though this appears to have just been a poor fit. It still leaves the team scrambling to fill a role on defense they did not anticipate having to fill this close to the start of the season.

Joey Bosa is reportedly considering retirement

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Joey Bosa remains unsigned with the calendar about to turn over to July, and it might stay that way.

In the latest edition of his podcast, ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested that Bosa has likely played his final NFL down and will retire. He cold, however, be enticed to return in the perfect situation.

“Joey Bosa has made so much money in his career that I think some people have wondered whether we will see him play in the NFL again. I think it is more likely than not that Joey Bosa has played his last NFL down,” Schefter said. “Could a situation like the 49ers come along that entices him enough to come out and play again? Yeah, absolutely. But the fact of the matter is, I think if the Niners wanted to pair those two together, it probably would’ve happened already. I think if Joey Bosa wanted to play football, it probably would’ve happened already.”

Bosa has been heavily linked to the Niners, largely due to the presence of his brother Nick. Nick, however, recently suggested that his brother is more worried about his golf game than he is the NFL right now.

Bosa turns 31 in July, but does have the wear and tear of 10 NFL seasons under his belt. He spent last year with the Buffalo Bills, where he collected five sacks in 15 games.

Jalen Duren’s future with Pistons is in doubt

June 26, 2026 by Grey Papke
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The Detroit Pistons’ offseason plans may be changing rapidly as Jalen Duren’s future with the team is in serious doubt.

Duren plans to explore sign-and-trade scenarios in free agency after being underwhelmed by the Pistons’ initial contract offer, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic. One source indicated that the gap between the two sides is so large that Duren is considering ways to move elsewhere, and that a sign-and-trade is preferred to receiving an offer sheet that the Pistons would likely match.

The Pistons seem at least willing to consider Duren’s objections, as Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported that the team could consider a sign-and-trade involving Duren and Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics.

There’s also a potential backstop emerging for Boston’s Jaylen Brown trade discussions. Detroit is very much weighing the prospect of signing-and-trading restricted free agent Jalen Duren for Brown, sources say, among other conceptual outcomes, if that option remains available… https://t.co/cHzIdOQbTO

— Jake Fischer (@JakeLFischer) June 26, 2026

The Pistons had publicly indicated their desire to keep Duren, who emerged as a genuine star during the regular season. His disappearing act in the playoffs likely complicated things, however, as he wound up averaging just 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. That was a far cry from the 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds he averaged during the regular season.

Duren is eligible for a 5-year, $287.1 million contract extension. Previous reports indicated that the Pistons were likely to offer a fair bit less than that in order to try and prevent him from becoming a restricted free agent.

Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza

June 26, 2026 by Dan Benton
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The New York Mets announced on Friday that they have dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza. Andy Green will serve as interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season.

https://twitter.com/Mets/status/2070499918179864687

The move comes with the Mets at 34-47, last place in the National League East, and 9.5 games out of the Wild Card race at the midpoint of the season.

Mendoza, hired before the 2024 season, led the club to the NLCS that year with an 89-73 record and was a finalist for NL Manager of the Year. He departs with a 206-199 mark over three seasons after the team missed the playoffs in 2025 following a late collapse.

President of Baseball Operations David Stearns praised Mendoza’s passion and grace, noting his transformative impact on players, staff, and culture.

“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,” said Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns in a statement, via ESPN. “Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.”

Owner Steve Cohen thanked Mendoza for his leadership and dedication, wished him and his family the best, and called the season a disappointment while reaffirming the commitment to a championship-caliber team.

Clippers draft pick intends to play for Auburn during 2026-27 season

June 26, 2026 by Dan Benton
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Narcisse Ngoy, selected 57th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2026 NBA Draft, announced Thursday that he plans to honor his commitment to Auburn University and play college basketball for the Tigers during the 2026-27 season.

The 7-foot center from France, who earned MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors in France’s Elite 2 League last season, committed to Auburn in March. In a statement on Instagram, Ngoy expressed gratitude to the Clippers while affirming his intentions.

“I am thankful for the LA Clippers’ confidence in me. I fully intend to honor my commitment to Auburn University, and I am looking forward to wearing the Auburn Tigers jersey for the 2026-27 season,” he wrote.

Because Ngoy turns 22 this summer, he was automatically eligible for the draft without forfeiting his college eligibility, unlike players who voluntarily declare. The Clippers view this as a draft-and-stash arrangement, retaining his rights while he develops at Auburn. This marks a rare instance of a player opting for college immediately after being drafted in the modern era.

Auburn coach Steven Pearl praised Ngoy’s high-upside potential, toughness, and physicality upon his signing.

This situation highlights evolving dynamics between professional and collegiate basketball amid rising NIL opportunities and eligibility rules.

Mauricio Pochettino lashes out at critics of USMNT loss

June 26, 2026 by Dan Benton
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Mauricio Pochettino expressed frustration with media questioning following the United States men’s national team’s 3-2 loss to Türkiye in their final 2026 World Cup Group D match at SoFi Stadium.

Despite the defeat on a last-kick goal, the USMNT topped the group after securing first place with victories in their opening two games.

Pochettino, who rotated his squad heavily with nine changes from the previous lineup, defended the approach aimed at resting key players, avoiding suspensions, and giving minutes to Christian Pulisic in his return from a calf injury. Pulisic delivered a strong impact off the bench, easing concerns ahead of the round of 32.

“The questions are a little bit weird,” Pochettino said, noting it was “a little bit sad” that no one congratulated the team on winning the group.

“I need to remind you and everyone that we won the group. Sorry guys, we won,” he said, via the New York Times.

He dismissed concerns over lost momentum as “petty” and thinking too small, emphasizing that true history is made by winning the tournament, not three group games.

“Making history is winning the World Cup,” Pochettino said, via ESPN. “It’s not winning three matches only within the World Cup. I don’t really understand. It’s a little bit petty if you will — you’re thinking a little too small. You’re telling me you could make history — what does it mean to win three matches if you lose the next one?”

Pochettino highlighted squad depth and readiness, pointing to the USMNT’s preparation for their matchup against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He remained confident in the team’s progress and focus on the knockout stages.

Prosecutors want Lions’ Terrion Arnold jailed until trial

June 26, 2026 by Dan Benton
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold appeared in a Tampa, Florida, courtroom Thursday via video following his surrender the previous night on felony charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, and conspiracy.

A judge ordered him held without bail pending a pretrial detention hearing scheduled for Monday morning, where prosecutors plan to argue he should remain in custody until trial.

The charges stem from a February 4 incident in which three men in their late teens were allegedly lured to a Tampa apartment, held at gunpoint, battered, pistol-whipped, and robbed. Authorities accuse Arnold, 23, of serving as the primary conspirator in retaliation for the theft of more than $250,000 in personal property from an Airbnb in Largo days earlier.

The victims were not involved in that theft, investigators said. The offenses carry the possibility of life in prison.

Arnold’s defense attorney stated he is “absolutely denying these allegations.” His agency representative, Denise White of EAG Sports Management, emphasized a lack of credible evidence and suggested reliance on cooperating witnesses with incentives to shift blame.

At least seven people face charges in the case, with two having pleaded guilty and one sentenced to four years.

The Lions acknowledged awareness of the situation but declined further comment out of respect for the legal process. Arnold, a 2024 first-round pick from Alabama, had been participating in the team’s activities before the arrest.

Doug Martin’s parents blame excessive police force for his death

June 26, 2026 by Dan Benton
FacebookTweetLinkedInRedditThreadsWhatsAppEmail

The parents of former NFL running back Doug Martin have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Oakland, California, its police department, and an ambulance company, alleging excessive force and delayed medical care contributed to their son’s death during a mental health crisis in October 2025.

Leslie and Douglas Martin claim that Oakland police officers restrained their 36-year-old son face down, with one or more officers applying pressure to his back, a maneuver they say caused restraint asphyxia.

According to the suit filed in federal court, Leslie Martin had called for medical assistance after her son began acting strangely. He fled the home and was found hiding in a neighbor’s basement.

The lawsuit alleges officers initially believed the unresponsive Martin was “sleeping or pretending to be” and delayed requesting aid. Paramedics from Falck Northern California reportedly took more than 15 minutes to arrive and did not promptly administer care, the family contends. Martin was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A family attorney noted the parents simply seek answers about what happened after calling for help.

“They just want to know what happened,” John Burris, the family’s attorney, told The Athletic. “Here’s a situation where the mother was calling for help. He was emotionally out of it, and she was calling for help.

“When you call for help and the police come, it’s not a death warrant. You don’t expect the person to die.”

Martin, a two-time Pro Bowler and 2015 first-team All-Pro known as the “Muscle Hamster,” rushed for over 5,300 yards in his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders.

The Oakland Police Department has declined to comment on the pending litigation, and the coroner’s investigation remains ongoing.
