Cavaliers player recounts a wild overseas story about getting mugged
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Sam Merrill opened up about a harrowing experience overseas, which took place long before he became a pro.
During a recent appearance on “The Old Man and The Three,” the former Utah State Aggies star left Cavaliers teammates Larry Nance Jr. and Jarrett Allen shocked after telling a story about the time when he and his companion got assaulted in Nicaragua.
Sam Merrill, who spent two years in Nicaragua on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said a group of guys tried to rob them of their phones, and while that was happening, he was hit in the face by a “big rock,” leaving him bloody. Although he and his friend were rescued by their leaders, the ordeal left him missing two teeth.

I now think Sam Merrill might quietly be the most interesting player in the league😂😂😂

Fortunately for Merrill, that traumatic incident did not cost him his basketball career. He later played for four years for the Aggies, averaging 16.8 points per game, while building a reputation as a deadly outside shooter, as he made 41.0% percent of his 3-point attempts in 131 games with the Aggies.
In 2020, Merrill was taken by the New Orleans Pelicans in the second round of the NBA draft before suiting up for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cavs, who signed him to a 4-year, $38 million contract in 2025.
Everyone said the same thing about LeBron James’ golf swing
LeBron James took to the links on Saturday before his game against the Golden State Warriors, but he did not exactly leave everyone impressed with his efforts.
Video of James golfing at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Ca. on Saturday emerged not long before the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Warriors. James’ shot did not exactly look like it went off perfectly in the brief video.

Many people responded to the video with shots at James’ golf game, joking that he was proof that being an elite athlete does not make one a great golfer.
Proof you can be athletic and still suck at golf.
— stuck (@stuck_n_a_bunk) February 28, 2026
Sweet Moses. Get this guy some lessons. Just another sport he’s not as good as MJ at.
— YoyoMa (@YoyoMa1984) February 28, 2026
This legitimately makes me feel better about myself.
— Ryan Scarborough (@DumbEinstein) February 28, 2026
Probably the most unathletic swings I have ever seen from a global athletic superstar.
— Perry (@Pauli_Pierre) February 28, 2026
James is a big-time golf enthusiast, and has suggested he’s looking forward to the offseason so he can do more of it. He’s even been spotted practicing his swing on the sideline during games. Based on this video, most would argue that he could still use some more practice.
Of course, James’ passion for golf is going to spark retirement rumors. That said, if he can play on the same day as a road game, he’s clearly able to find time to do whatever he wants to do.
Bruce Pearl had harsh words for the only undefeated Division I team left
Bruce Pearl doesn’t think that the only undefeated Division I team is worthy of an at-large berth in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, the former Auburn Tigers head coach said that despite the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks winning all of their first 29 games in the 2025-26 college basketball season, it does not mean they can expect an invite to the Big Dance as an at-large team.
“If we’re selecting the 68 best teams, then Miami (Ohio) is going to have to win their tournament to qualify as a champion,” said Pearl, who now works for TNT Sports. “Because as an at-large, they are not one of the best teams in the country.”
Does 29-0 Miami (OH) deserve a March Madness bid? 🤔@JalenRose, @coachbrucepearl & @jamalmashburn debate the nation's only undefeated team 👀 pic.twitter.com/VyXizQgApa
— TNT Sports U.S. (@TNTSportsUS) February 28, 2026
Pearl’s knock on Miami (Ohio) is a familiar narrative about dominant programs from mid-major conferences. The quality of their wins and the strength of their schedules are two factors many use to doubt their credentials as an at-large team.
In the case of the RedHawks, they have feasted on their rivals in the Mid-American Conference, a one-bid league. Even with 29 straight victories to start the season, it would take just one loss for Miami (OH)’s bubble to burst. Also, none of those wins are in Quadrant 1, and only one is in Quadrant 2. Moreover, 16 of those victories belong in the Quadrant 4.
The RedHawks only have two games left to play in the regular season before the MAC Tournament, which they probably still have to win to secure a ticket to March Madness.
Kyler Murray has been linked to a new team
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has been linked to a new team during the NFL Combine rumor mill.
NBC Sports fantasy expert Matthew Berry is in attendance at the combine in Indianapolis, and shared some of the rumors he has frequently been hearing. One he said he keeps hearing is that Murray is not drawing much interest from the Minnesota Vikings, but could land with the New York Jets.
QB rumors from the NFL Combine! @matthewberrytmr on where Malik Willis and Kyler Murray wind up? Who do the Vikings like? And more important, what big name QB are they NOT interested in? pic.twitter.com/SK4yx4zfVQ
— Rotoworld Football (@rotoworld_fb) February 28, 2026
The relationship between Murray and the Cardinals appears to have run its course. The only real question is when and how the team will opt to move on from him and his roughly $50 million salary.
The Jets, meanwhile, have no clear solution to their quarterback position. Justin Fields did not work out in 2025, and Fernando Mendoza almost certainly will not be on the board for them when they pick at No. 2 overall. That could force them to go with someone like Murray, who has flashed plenty of talent but has struggled with injuries and consistency over the past few seasons.
Murray was limited to just five games last season due to a foot injury. In 2024, his last healthy season, he threw for 3,851 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as the Cardinals went 8-9.
Joe Espada makes a statement on Josh Hader’s Opening Day availability
At this point, it may be fair to assume that Josh Hader will not be ready to see action by Opening Day.
While the door isn’t completely shut on star Houston Astros reliever Josh Hader suiting up for the team’s 2026 Opening Day, signs suggest otherwise.
According to Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle, Hader is still just playing catch in spring training, which is not exactly a promising sign for his availability on Opening Day, which is just less than a month away.
That said, Astros manager Joe Espada thinks that’s enough time for Hader to show enough progress to make it.
“I think we still have a little bit more time,” Espada said on Saturday. “Once we start getting down to that we’ll talk more on that. But right now it’s still premature just to see where we’re at by March 26.”
Having a healthy Hader ready for Opening Day will give Houston’s confidence a big shot, as the Astros look to bounce back after winning just 87 games and missing the postseason in the 2025 season.
Hader was putting together an elite campaign in 2025 (2.05 ERA and 205 ERA+ with 28 saves through 48 appearances) until he was diagnosed with a capsule sprain in his left shoulder, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. He also suffered a setback in January due to biceps inflammation.
Vikings may move on from JJ McCarthy
The Minnesota Vikings have made it fairly clear that they intend to bring in a veteran quarterback to compete with JJ McCarthy. A new report suggests, however, that they might get rid of McCarthy entirely before the start of next season.
The Vikings are ready to “move on” from McCarthy after just two seasons, according to Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports. The quarterback the Vikings bring in will likely be McCarthy’s eventual replacement, not his competition.
If true, the Vikings have pretty much lost all faith in McCarthy very quickly. He made ten underwhelming starts for them in 2025, throwing for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. While the team went 6-4 in those starts, the wins were largely down to their defense more than anything McCarthy did.
Still, it is highly uncommon for an NFL team to give up on a top-10 pick so quickly. On the other hand, based on some of the stories we have heard about McCarthy, it is no huge surprise that coach Kevin O’Connell would want a more trustworthy option at quarterback.
The Vikings have frequently been named as a possible landing spot for a lot of quarterbacks already this offseason. Whoever they add may well be the favorite to start going forward.
Carson Beck got relentlessly booed at the NFL Combine
Indiana Hoosiers fans appear to still have a bone to pick with former Miami quarterback Carson Beck.
Beck was booed pretty much every time he was shown during his workout at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, In. on Saturday. The crowd was not overwhelming, but it was certainly loud enough to be hear on NFL Network’s broadcast.

Beck and Miami lost the CFP national championship game to Indiana in January. pic.twitter.com/SkmObBOWkL
Indiana beat Beck and the Hurricanes in the College Football Playoff final, so the boos certainly were not out of bitterness. It is far more likely that Hoosiers fans think poorly of Beck because he left the field that night without congratulating Indiana, a move that did not sit well with their fans and made Beck look like a sore loser.
Ultimately, Beck’s chilly reception in Indianapolis will have no impact on his draft status. He might want to brace himself for extra hostility if he ever has to play a road game against the Colts, though.
Udonis Haslem calls out who’s to blame for the Lakers’ skid
The Los Angeles Lakers have struggled to find their groove since action resumed in the NBA following the league’s All-Star Weekend.
After the break, LeBron James and company have gone just 1-3, entering Saturday on a three-game losing skid, with each loss seemingly more infuriating than the last.
While many will find it easy to lay the blame for the Lakers’ struggles on head coach JJ Redick, former NBA forward Udonis Haslem believes it’s on the players.
“What the hell are you doing? What the hell is going on? This is not on JJ. This is on the players,” the Amazon Prime Video analyst Haslem said on Saturday about Los Angeles’ recent troubles on the court.
Haslem then went on to call out superstars Luka Doncic and LeBron James over their late-game blunders.
“Your two main guys [are] making mistakes down the stretch. That can’t happen if you want to be a championship team.”

After getting thumped by the Boston Celtics at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Calif., via a 111-89 score on Sunday, the Lakers suffered consecutive close losses to the Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns by a combined margin of just four points.
In the 110-109 home loss to Orlando on Tuesday, Doncic decided not to pull the trigger on what appeared to be a wide-open shot in the waning seconds of the contest.
On Friday at the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Ariz., the Lakers went down to the wire again, suffering a 113-110 defeat, as they got burned in the clutch by a Royce O’Neale 3-pointer, in part because of James’ poor defensive rotation.
Los Angeles will look to turn things around Sunday against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif.
Sonny Styles’ mom reveals the surprising inspiration behind his nickname
Perhaps not many people know that Ohio State Buckeyes linebacker Sonny Styles’ real name is Alex, but there’s an interesting story behind the nickname.
During an interview with Stacey Dales of NFL Network on Friday at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Laverna Styles, Sonny’s mother, explained why he’s called Sonny even though his real name is Alex.
“He had such a hot temper, so we named him after Sonny from ‘The Godfather’ because when him and little Lorenzo [his brother and fellow NFL draft prospect] would get into an argument, he would get so mad,” Laverna shared. “He could go from zero to 10 in the blink of an eye, so his nickname became Sonny.”
Anyone who has seen The Godfather knows how fiery Sonny Corleone was in the film. Portrayed by James Caan, Sonny is a fiery character who simply doesn’t hold anything back.
The first installment of The Godfather franchise is widely regarded as one of the greatest motion pictures of all time, and Caan’s character helped a lot in elevating it to the level it’s been regarded ever since it was introduced in 1972.
Hopefully for Sonny Styles, his impact on whichever NFL team he lands with will be just as tremendous — if not greater.
In four years with the Buckeyes, he recorded a total of 244 tackles, 9.0 sacks and 9 passes defended, while winning a national championship in the 2024 season.
Kevin Durant had a heated exchange with Tyler Herro
Kevin Durant lost his cool with Tyler Herro during the first quarter of Saturday’s game.
Durant and Herro both got technical fouls during the first quarter of the game at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Fla. on Saturday. It wasn’t clear what started the incident, but Durant was clearly angry with Herro over something Herro said to him.
The two had to be separated, and Herro appeared to be referring to Durant as a “b-tch” as they were kept apart.

— Heat Central (@HeatCulture13) February 28, 2026
"YOU A B*TCH" https://t.co/yGQaVZthAV pic.twitter.com/AsB0qtjuEe
Durant was still talking trash to Herro after play resumed. At one point, he seemed to tell Herro that the Heat wing couldn’t guard him, and mocked the Heat for sending double teams at him.
Notably, Herro was at the center of a fight between the Heat and Rockets in December 2024. It is unclear if that had anything to do with this exchange, especially since Durant was not even a member of the Rockets at that point.
Durant, of course, has no problem getting into it with anyone. Herro is no exception, whether Durant was just coming to the defense of his new teammates or not.
2-time MLB All-Star agrees to sign with Royals
The Kansas City Royals are adding a two-time All-Star to their roster roughly a month before Opening Day.
The Royals have agreed to terms with outfielder Starling Marte, according to multiple reports. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that Marte is getting a major league deal.
The Royals are in agreement with Starling Marte on a major league contract as @Feinsand 1st reported. He was a player they inquired about a lot last year when he was a Met.
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) February 28, 2026
Marte is a low-risk addition for the Royals and could provide huge upside if he can get anywhere close to his previous peak. He hit .270 last season with the New York Mets, but hit .292 with 16 home runs and 18 stolen bases as recently as 2022.
On the other hand, Marte turned 37 last October, and his speed and power are inevitably going to fade as he gets older. That is why he was still available to the Royals at the end of February, with most teams clearly not seeing a role for him on their rosters this year.
The Mets had deemed Marte expendable after signing Juan Soto, but his contract was too hefty to move. The Royals think he has more to offer, and will now get to find out if they’re right at a greatly reduced price.
Jeremiyah Love was hilariously clueless on a question about the Cowboys
Jeremiyah Love is not exactly familiar with the lore of the Dallas Cowboys.
The star running back prospect Love met with reporters this week at the NFL Combine. During his media session, Love was asked about the teams that he had met with thus far.
One reporter proceeded to ask Love if he had met with “America’s Team” (a.k.a. the Cowboys). A clueless Love then hilariously replied, “Who is that?”
Love ultimately played it mum on whether or not he had actually met with Dallas and also noted that his father is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan who does not like the Cowboys. Here is the funny video.
“Have you met with America’s Team yet?”

Jeremiyah Love: “Who is that?”
The No. 1 RB (and maybe the best overall player) in the NFL Draft is not a Dallas Cowboys guy.
The Notre Dame prospect shouldn’t have to worry about it. Dallas has the No. 12 pick. Love is a top 10 talent. pic.twitter.com/VbiS3gM5HU
“America’s Team” is a longstanding nickname for the Cowboys which was coined back in the 1970s as the team was consistently winning in the playoffs (becoming the most popular team in the country as a result). That run included two Super Bowl titles in the ’70s as well as an additional three Super Bowls in the 1990s.
However, the 20-year-old Love, who was born in 2005, is familiar with a very different version of the Cowboys. Those Cowboys have won just three total playoff games throughout Love’s entire lifetime and are still looking for their first NFC title game berth since 1995.
Love was the Doak Walker Award winner and rushed for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns with Notre Dame last season. With some incredible highlight-reel runs in his bag as well, Love is projected to be a top-10 pick in this year’s NFL Draft. Meanwhile, “America’s Team” does not select until pick No. 12, so Love probably will not have to learn any of Dallas’ mythology any time soon.
Arkansas RB Mike Washington had unusual reaction to his NFL Combine run
Arkansas running back Mike Washington Jr. turned in one of the best 40-yard dash performances of the NFL Combine, and his reaction was quite unusual.
Washington ran a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash, the fastest time among all running backs at the Combine. His reaction was to break down in tears.
“I’m so emotional, man. I worked my whole life for this,” Washington told NFL Network’s Stacey Dales.

The 40-yard dash was never seen as this significant in the past, but it has gained in importance over the last decade or so. NFL teams love athleticism, and an unexpectedly good 40-time can boost a player’s draft stock significantly.
Washington rushed for 1,070 yards and 8 touchdowns at Arkansas last season. He also previously played for Buffalo and New Mexico State, and figures to get a lot of looks from NFL teams.
Cam Thomas takes more shots at his former team Nets
In true Cam Thomas form, he is not holding back on the shots.
The new Milwaukee Bucks guard Thomas went viral this week over his latest round of shots at his former team, the Brooklyn Nets. Thomas was waived by Brooklyn earlier this month after spending the first four-and-a-half seasons of his career with them and then signed with the Bucks as a free agent.
In an interview with Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Thomas ripped the Nets over their supposed lack of belief in him.
“That’s just who they are,” Thomas said. “They don’t believe in nobody.
“I never asked. I don’t even care anymore,” added Thomas.”I’m on a different team. I don’t want to talk about them much. But that’s what it was. They didn’t believe. Always thought — I don’t know. They always thought something was better, I guess. I don’t know. Always chasing something.”
Thomas, 24, was a first-round pick by the Nets back in 2021 (No. 27 overall). He managed to develop into one of the game’s more underrated scorers while in Brooklyn, posting a stout 24.0 points per game last season.
But Thomas also struggled with hamstring injuries over the last couple of seasons, and things really fell apart for him with the Nets this season. Thomas averaged just 15.2 points per game for Brooklyn on the year before being waived and was even benched by the Nets at one point for stat-padding.
After his exit from Brooklyn, Thomas took a parting shot at the organization. Now the swipes are continuing during Thomas’ Milwaukee era (with him averaging 14.0 points per game in a limited bench role for the Bucks thus far).
Lane Kiffin has 2-word response to being photobombed by Livvy Dunne
Lane Kiffin got the full LSU experience on Friday while attending the school’s gymnastics meet against Alabama.
Kiffin spoke to SEC Network during the meet, but his interview was upstaged by former LSU gymnasts Livvy Dunne and Aleah Finnegan. They snuck into the background and video-bombed Kiffin’s interview, which went completely unnoticed by the coach at the time.
Afterward, however, Kiffin was quick to respond with a joking two-word comment.
“Clout chasers,” Kiffin wrote on X.
Clout chasers @livvydunne @aleahfinn 🤣 @SECNetwork @LSUgym https://t.co/GbXksiH78y
— Lane Kiffin (@Lane_Kiffin) February 28, 2026
The joke is that Dunne and Finnegan were using Kiffin to get attention. Dunne gets attention, both wanted and unwanted, wherever she goes, which is why Kiffin’s crack is so amusing.
Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU at the end of November, and he has quickly hit the ground running as he tries to get the football program back into top shape. Clearly, he has the backing of at least one of the school’s most famous alums.
Mark Sanchez was allegedly on illegal drugs during stabbing incident
Former FOX broadcaster Mark Sanchez has been accused of being under the influence of illegal drugs during an incident in early October.
A legal filing by Sanchez’s accuser Perry Tole claims that a preliminary investigation has led them to believe that Sanchez was under the influence of drugs at the time of the alleged stabbing, via Oliver Salt of the Daily Mail. The filing claims this means Sanchez was dealing with the effects of substances “including but not limited to cocaine, marijuana, fentanyl, and alcohol.”
Sanchez’s attorney Andrew M. McNeil said the claims, which were not backed by evidence, were “allegations in a civil filing, nothing more, and they should be treated accordingly.”
Sanchez suffered multiple stab wounds during the incident, though Tole was allegedly acting in self-defense after the former NFL quarterback confronted and attacked him. Sanchez is facing a felony charge stemming from the incident, and also lost his broadcasting job with FOX.
Tole has also filed a lawsuit against both Sanchez and FOX Sports, alleging severe physical injuries as a result of the confrontation.
Diego Pavia shares how Johnny Manziel is helping him
Diego Pavia is getting help from an unlikely source as he prepares for the NFL Draft.
The former Vanderbilt quarterback admitted he has been receiving mentorship from Johnny Manziel in the lead-up to the draft. Manziel has counseled Pavia on what to expect and how to deal with the pre-draft process.
“He’s given me what to look out for, what it’s like, how to stay in the process. He’s given me some good advice, for sure,” Pavia said. “He always reaches out, checks up on me, makes sure I’m good. He’s just a friend to me. He’s given me some mentorship, he’s been around me, he’s been around my family. He’s just a great person for those that don’t know him.”
At first glance, Manziel would be an odd choice of mentor for anyone. If there is anyone it makes sense for, though, it would be Pavia, who has a similarly over-the-top personality. Whether it actually benefits him is another question entirely, especially in light of how Pavia has handled some of the questions that surround him at the NFL Combine.
Manziel infamously crashed out of the NFL in spectacular fashion. He could certainly offer Pavia some guidance in terms of what not to do, and use himself as a cautionary tale.

Malfunctioning arena horn delayed Pistons-Cavaliers for 13 minutes
The Detroit Pistons hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers at Little Caesars Arena on Friday night in a game that featured more than just basketball drama.
In the third quarter, with the Pistons clinging to a slim 65-64 lead, a power surge triggered an electrical malfunction, sending the arena’s overhead horn into an unrelenting blare. The deafening buzzer refused to quit, halting play for nearly 13 minutes as staff scrambled to silence the rogue noise.
Players returned to the benches, then warmed up on the court while arena workers battled the short-circuit atop the giant scoreboard.
Eventually, they cut power to the board, muting the horn to a roaring cheer and standing ovation from the relieved crowd.
Play resumed using a manual air horn for timeouts, though the scoreboard flickered back on soon after.
Adding to the chaos, a separate delay occurred when Cavaliers guard Dennis Schroder pointed out a profane fan, leading to an ejection.
Despite the interruptions, the Pistons prevailed in overtime, 122-119, proving they could handle both opponents and technical difficulties.
Ex-MLB pitcher sentenced to life in prison for 2021 murder
Former Major League Baseball pitcher Dan Serafini was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2021 shooting death of his father-in-law and the attempted murder of his mother-in-law during a burglary at their home near Lake Tahoe.
Serafini, 51, was convicted in July 2025 of first-degree murder in the death of Gary Spohr, attempted murder of Wendy Wood, and first-degree burglary.
Spohr was killed in the June 2021 attack, while Wood survived the shooting but died a year later by suicide. The crime occurred at the couple’s residence in Homewood, California.
Prosecutors argued that Serafini harbored deep resentment toward his wife’s wealthy parents, presenting evidence of angry emails, text messages, and statements indicating he was willing to pay $20,000 to have them killed. A co-defendant, Samantha Scott, a friend and former nanny, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact.
During sentencing on Friday, Serafini addressed the court, maintaining his innocence and describing himself as a “broken, imperfect man that makes mistakes.”
Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire stated that the attack’s impact extended beyond the victims, deeply affecting family and community members. Serafini’s motions for a new trial were denied.
Serafini, drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1992, pitched for several MLB teams, including the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Colorado Rockies over an 11-year career.
Former Giants first-round pick takes over as IFL commissioner
Former NFL offensive lineman Justin Pugh, selected 19th overall by the New York Giants in the 2013 draft, has been appointed commissioner of the Italian Football League (IFL).
After an 11-year career that included stints with the Giants and Arizona Cardinals, Pugh is transitioning to lead the IFL, which has operated since 1980 and completed 44 seasons of American football in Italy.
The league has crowned 12 different champions in its Italian Bowl history.
Pugh shared his excitement in a public statement, highlighting American football’s established roots and passionate following in Italy. He committed to modernizing the league’s infrastructure, bolstering governance, raising competitive standards, and developing a sustainable framework for long-term expansion across Europe.
Leveraging his high-level NFL experience, Pugh plans to position the IFL as a credible, forward-thinking organization that links Italian football to the international game. He described Italy as uniquely positioned—thanks to its cultural prestige and market potential—to elevate American football beyond sport into a platform merging athletic excellence with global appeal.
“Our objective is to position the IFL as a structured, credible and forward looking institution, capable of connecting Italian Football to the broader international ecosystem of the game. Italy has the talent, the market and the symbolic power to play a meaningful role in the global development of American Football, Pugh said, in part.
This role underscores ongoing initiatives to grow the game worldwide, with Pugh focused on structure, ambition, and meaningful progress starting immediately.
