Darrelle Revis won’t rule out another holdout this summer

When Darrelle Revis held out of Jets training camp in 2010, an agreement was reached that was seen as a temporary fix. He and the team agreed to a four-year, $46 million contract which paid Revis $32.5 million in 2010 and 2011 but will only dish out a combined $13.5 million in 2012 and 2013. Based on the current market, that is not enough for the player whom the Jets consider to be the best cornerback in the NFL. For that reason, Revis has not ruled out a potential holdout again this summer.

“I just don’t know,” Revis said Monday at a charity function in NYC according to the NY Post. “I’m not saying I am going to hold out. I’m not saying I’m not going to hold out. I just don’t know. Right now my focus is being on the team.

“Right now, it’s Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization. I can’t sit here and say I’m going to hold out because I don’t know. That time hasn’t come yet. That’s something we’re not thinking about right now. Right now we’re just thinking about me being a part of the team, being a leader for this team and getting ready for the season.”

Revis will be 27 at the start of next season, so he’s still in the prime of his career. The highest-paid corners in the league make over $10 million per season, so Revis will be seeking that type of deal for at least the next five or six seasons.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortenson (via Pro Football Talk), the Jets are “floored” by Revis’ comments and offended that he thinks they could wind up in the same situation this summer. However, superstars having to hold out to get what they want has become commonplace in the NFL, so you can’t blame Revis for leaving the possibility open.
