Tim Tebow’s GQ spread includes ‘sexy Jesus’ pose

Tim Tebow and Cam Newton are featured on two separate covers of GQ magazine’s September “NFL Kick-Off” Issue, but it’s a photo from Tebow’s spread that’s receiving the most attention.

In one photo Tebow poses on a football field with his arms spread like Jesus Christ on the cross. It turns out the photo was shot while Tebow was in college at the University of Florida, but it was digitally altered to remove Gators signage from the background and made black and white to obscure the Gators colors from Tebow’s pants.

The photo riled up WFAN sports talk radio host Craig Carton, who called Tebow a “narcisist” and a “fraud,” and labeled him “sexy Jesus.”

“He gets it, he plays the role,” Carton said on his show. “He’s typically very, very sincere and very, very consistent about who he is and what his beliefs are. You just saw a little inkling into what he thinks of himself.”

Is Carton’s criticism of Tebow’s “sexy Jesus” pose warranted? It doesn’t look like GQ was able to get much time with Tebow for the cover story, so maybe that’s why they went back to run an old photo. Is it possible that Tebow posed for it when he was younger and more naive and that he wouldn’t have approved it now? We’ve seen some famous athletes do some questionable poses when they’re under the direction of a professional photographer, so it might be a leap to call Tebow “narcissistic” and a “fraud” for posing like that a few years ago.

Tebow is unafraid to voice his religious beliefs and says he won’t stop praising the Lord whenever he has the opportunity. This isn’t the first time Tebow being compared to Jesus has caused a controversy, and it won’t be the last. But does posing for a photo like that mean Tebow is narcissistic and a fraud?

You can’t blame Tebow for an edited and cropped photograph that someone else interprets as something. You can do the same thing with ANY photo of an olympic athlete that has their hands up.
Lame story trying to get hits.

    Regarding the pic:

Finally, some insight into how Tebow sees himself.

Not a mention that this spread was shot when he was at University of Florida.  He also declined a request to be interviewed for it.  Also Craig Carton is a moron, writing an article based on anything he says shows the depth of the writers intelligence.

It’s amazing that a man like Tim Tebow could emanate from the disgusting and degenerate society America has become today in the year of our Lord 2012. What Tim Tebow represents is the last remnant of what America at one time was and represented to the world, and what the Communists that are in control of America today despise. If you want to easily find out who is the enemy of America and our traditional values, values America was founded upon, look for the Tebow bashers and mockers. LONG LIVE THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC FOUNDED ON “GOD” GIVEN RIGHTS AS ENUMERATED IN THE “BILL OF RIGHTS”.!!!!

This is how america like to tear down their own… Poor Tebow has done nothing else to cause a fall from grace, so an interview and eons old photo, edited, cropped and tampered with is now used to try and crucify him… Classic!!! Consider 1 Peter 12:19. Shine on Tebow!

Look here, he can’t even throw a shirt on!

  • Jerrome Mckely

Tebow has exploited religion for money for some time now, why? because its profitable Tebow a no talent QB with charisma and charm reminds me of a cult leader.  The media pumping him up as if he is God allowed this avenue to open. Many athletes that are very religious did not exploit their religion for money. Tebow signed the wavier allowing GQ  artistic privilege knew the deal but as all aggressive money hungry people he did not care. He could have asked for first right of refusal in his contract with GQ. Greed Greed Greed he continue to exploit his religion and people are too blind to see this point.

the wildcat will work in the nfl if goodell is successful in wussing up the nfl, they need to have qbs and wide recievers wear dresses so the defences will know who can and cannot be hit, then the wildcat qb will be safe from the normal wear and tear of football formerly a contact sport.

You’re not a Christian are you Mr. McKely?  Didn’t think so.  Anyone who can only think of Christanity in terms of it beng a “religion” isn’t a Christian.  Religion is man’s attempt to get God’s attention.  Christianity is God’s attempt to get man’s.  No amount of religion will ever make you acceptable to God.  That’s why He sent Jesus to pay the price for our sin and therfore provide that acceptability.  Whether Tim Tebow is or is not a charlatan is of zero importance to God with regard to you.   God only wants to know if YOU are too proud to accept His free offer of enternal life paid for by Jesus Christ.

  • hammr25

Why is he “Sexy Jesus”?  That assumes that the other Jesus wasn’t Sexy back in his day.  If he was perfect like the bible says then maybe he rocked a hot body as well.

God bless you all…I am a Minister and for someone to claim to be a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ and to take a photo like this is very offensive and dissrespectful , How can he take such a photo and pose as Jesus was when he was beaten and killed for us all!  Tebow really needs to repent!!!

  • ttraider27

Seriously?  You do know its illegal to get paid for this kind of stuff as an amatuer athlete right?  He didn’t get any money from photo’s in college, you are a tool.  Tebow is probably visiting someone in a hospital right now, keep up your nonsense.  Not Tebow’s fault that a genuine good person offends all the worthles jerk offs out there who don’t do anything for anyone but themselves.  Grow up.

  • Bruce Bergman

I remember Michael Jordan posing on the cover of a book about him with his arms stretched out holding basketballs.  Rare Air I believe was the title.  No one thought it was a reference to Jesus on the cross.  Tim is the real deal and people just need to accept that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/The.JR.Jake John Merritt

That day on the cross, two others died with Jesus Christ.  Do you remember.  Both were reported thieves.   One somewhat taunted and the other did not. Golgotha was known as the :Hill of the Skulls’ for good reason. That day was NOT the first time they had crucified people because it was common practice back then.  Tim can represent whomever he wants but for him to lay claim that he is Jesus would make him the anti-Christ and the Great Deceiver.  Tim if you are smart, which you are; knock it off.  Without trying and probably not purposeful; you are mocking and ridiculing without justification.  You don’t have to prove your love for Jesus because he already knows.

Craig Carton……… I hear “HELL” is hot….very hot!!! You’re an idiot!

  • Bearsfan04

People make to much out of this stuff, Tebow is sincere in his displays of faith, it’s what truly inspires him and motivates him over and above being recognized as a good football player.  As far as his abilities on the field are concerned, his record speaks for itself; I kind of put him in the same category as a Jeff Garcia or Doug Flutie, not always fundementally sound,  not always pretty to watch but at the end of the day it’s not how you win, it’s how many you win and this Guy wins games!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/larry.leblanc.315 Larry LeBlanc

Your entire statement is total BS !  You are accused of manufacturing intentions for the sake of making a Faux  case against Tebow.  I find your
statement that “…he continues to exploit his religion and people are too blind to this point without  credability. You are probably a declared atheists who finds any refernces to God or Jesus fair game for manufacturing a faux case against Tebow.  Judge Tebow as an NFL professional taking the hard knocks on the playing field. Be critical of Tebow where he needs to be criticized…his raw performance (or lack there of) on the playing field.  Stop knee jerking over his faith or making false accusations concerning alledged intentions. Let him stand his own merits..his perfomance.

  • shamsky24

James, James, James… do you really think that Jesus would say something so nasty to a complete stranger?   Would Tim Tebow?   You really should stop being such an angry, hypocritical schnook and strive to be more like your idol.

Truly hell hath no fury like a Tebot scorned.

  • shamsky24

It never fails.   Any criticism of St. Timothy invariably brings an avalanche of angry responses from his ever-expanding legion of whacked-out, delusional Jesus freaks.    When are you Tebots going to get it through your heads that nobody has a problem with your hero’s religious beliefs?   What people object to is his public exploitation of those beliefs (as typified by this photo spread, which even you ought to have found offensive), and his media manipulation of dimwitted schmucks like you in order to detract from the fact that he’s an absolutely dreadful quarterback who clearly has no business wearing an NFL uniform.

And you can re-post the Sermon on the Mount here for all I care, but it won’t change the fact that Tim Tebow sucks.

  • shamsky24

It’s also not Mr. Mckely’s fault that any criticism of Tim Tebow — warranted or not — invariably brings this sort of hate-filled response from the Tebot army.    Why can’t you people defend your hero without personally attacking anyone and everyone who doesn’t share your lofty opinion about him?   Are you really that insecure?  Looks to me like you’re the one who needs to grow up.

  • saywhatagain42

Forget Tebow.  What are YOU going to do with Jesus?

  • saywhatagain42

Thanks for calling me a “Jesus freak”. I am quilty as charged. I pray that one day you will be too. “The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3W7KJ7LAI6ZT4EI6RXRPDVBYGQ Rachel

I agree that the Tebow fans shouldn’t attack anyone just cuz they don’t like Tebow…but still he is a good player and very sincere with his beliefs I do think that people should lay off him and pay more attention to the game he plays then whether or not he is a sincer Christian. I love Tebow and don’t think he should be held responsible for something he did when he was younger..so he had some fun and did some ridiculous pose..so what? we all do it. to Tebow fans lay off of people either they like him or they don’t..none Tebow fans..don’t judge Tebow’s beliefs but judge how well he does or doesn’t play..that’s what matter more anyway.
