Football, New England Patriots, Randy Moss

Will the Patriots Consider Randy Moss in 2011? Will He Retire?

April 1, 2011 by Steve DelVecchio • Comments

If there is football in 2011, Randy Moss wants to play. At age 34, the wide receiver is certainly not in the prime years of his career. After forcing his way out of New England last season, Moss enjoyed a short re-marriage with the team that gave him his start in the NFL.  He was then claimed by the Titans where he was a complete non-factor for the remainder of the 2010 season.  Now he’s a free agent and it’s no secret Moss would love to return to the New England Patriots.

Randy knew the best situation for him was in New England.  That’s why he wanted a contract extension, and that’s why he became such a distraction.  He thought that by acting like a wise ass in front of the media, the Patriots might sign him to an extension so he would shut up and play.  Along the way, Moss clearly forgot he was in Foxboro — where Bill Belichick is the mayor.

After No. 81 left, Tom Brady turned in arguably the best season of his career — including the famous explosion of 2007.  Although they would lose to the Jets in their first game of the playoffs, the Patriots went 14-2 in the regular season and made it clear they did not need Moss to win.  That’s bad news for the future Hall of Famer, who is looking for a home in 2011.

“I want to play wherever they want me to play,” Moss said via Pro Football Talk. “I’m a free agent. I know I’m 34. I know I didn’t have a great season last year. But I also know that these still work [holds up his hands] and I know I can still play at a high level. We just need to get this season back on track so I can start working on that team that wants Randy Moss on their roster.”

As usual with the third person.  The reality is Moss spent the better part of 2011 proving he will never grow up.  He has been public about the fact that his heart is in New England, so if you were the coach of a team other than the Patriots would you want a half-hearted Moss on your roster?  Better yet, if you were the Patriots and went 14-2 with a quarterback that won the league MVP, would you want him back?  The answer to the latter is a definite no.  Don’t be shocked if the same answer applies for the former and we have seen the last of Randy Moss in an NFL uniform.
