Judo fighter Nick Delpopolo tests positive for weed after eating ‘baked goods’

Someone tell judoka Nick Delpopolo to lay off those pot brownies.

Delpopolo, a US judo fighter, was expelled from the Olympics after failing an in-competition doping test. The 23-year-old tested positive for cannabis on July 30 — the day he competed.

Delpopolo said the positive test was “caused by my inadvertent consumption of food that I did not realize had been baked with marijuana.”

The youngster from New Jersey finished 7th in the 73-kilogram class and actually beat two opponents before losing to two others.

As much as we’ll blame Delpopolo for the mistake, it’s hard not to look at this as the latest example of the Olympics kicking out athletes for minor offenses. It’s not as bad as what happened to this sprinter, but it’s still pretty lame. And don’t tell me the weed gave him a competitive advantage, either.
