Matt Cain hit a drive with Dustin Johnson into McCovey Cove before perfect game (Video)

Matt Cain warmed up for his perfect game on Wednesday night against the Astros in an unconventional way: by hitting a golf ball into McCovey Cove.

PGA Tour golfer Dustin Johnson was visiting AT&T Park ahead of the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco and hit some balls into McCovey Cove before taking in the game. He also threw out the ceremonial first pitch, though he didn’t pull it off as well as Rory McIlroy.

In addition to Johnson smacking some balls into the water, a few Giants players took swings including Clay Hensley, Aubrey Huff, and former player J.T. Snow. They were looking for more volunteers and Cain stepped forward for a swing. Cain blasted one out of the park and into the water.

“I knew he was a good golfer,” Johnson said about Cain. “(Giants GM Brian Sabean) didn’t want him (to hit). He said he was going inside.”

Johnson also gave himself some credit for Cain’s perfect game:

Dustin Johnson withdrew from the Masters after tweaking his back lifting jet ski

If you thought this Masters was going to be the time Dustin Johnson won his first major, think again. Johnson withdrew from the tournament on Tuesday after aggravating his back lifting a jet ski last week, his agent said.

Johnson’s back has been hurt since January, but he played through some minor pain the following six weeks. He’s been going through therapy and taking anti-inflammatory medicine, but the “tweaked back” was bad enough to keep him out of the tournament.

Johnson has finished eighth-or-better in three of the majors, but he’s had the least amount of success at the Masters, where his best finish was 30th. The worst part about his injury and late withdrawal is that the Masters doesn’t have an alternate list, so nobody could take his place.

Dustin Johnson Denies He is Dating Natalie Gulbis, Says ‘I’m a Single Guy’

Call this the Dustin Johnson/Natalie Gulbis update part three. Last weekend Gulbis was following Johnson around for the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua and according to Golf.com, confirmed she and Dustin were dating. Here was the exact excerpt from the story: “Following Johnson’s 73, Gulbis confirmed they were dating but said with a laugh, ‘I’ll let Dustin handle our PR.’ Reached Saturday evening, he declined comment.”

In our story, we noted how Johnson pulled out of this week’s Sony Open to handle some things at home. The New York Post later said he was going home to settle matters with Amanda Caulder, his college girlfriend. We wondered if Gulbis’ announcement had killed Dustin’s game, and it appeared as if that was the case.

Well Johnson is tired of people talking about his business publicly, and he addressed the media to set things straight.

Was Dustin Johnson Relationship with Amanda Caulder Burned by Natalie Gulbis?

Earlier this week we passed along the news of golf’s new super couple, Dustin Johnson and Natalie Gulbis, getting together. Gulbis was spotted following Johnson during his third round on Saturday and confirmed the two were dating. Gulbis deferred to Johnson for further public comments, but he declined to talk. Now we know why.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, Johnson still had yet to tie up a loose end with his current girlfriend Amanda Caulder when the news of the Gulbis relationship leaked. Gulp. What’s worse is that apparently Caulder’s relationship with Johnson began in the same fashion — he was still involved with a previous girl at the time supposedly — so this seems like Karma.

The info explains two things: one, why Johnson was so quiet about his relationship with Gulbis. Two, why he pulled out of this week’s Sony Open to take care of some stuff at home. It all makes sense now. This guy just needs to be more forthcoming. Good thing he’s stupid long, if you know what I mean.

Natalie Gulbis Confirms She and Dustin Johnson are Dating

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about celebrities, it’s that they react to dating news by making some of their own. With that in mind, perhaps it was the news last week that Ben Roethlisberger was getting engaged that inspired golfer Natalie Gulbis to go public about her relationship with fellow golfer Dustin Johnson. After all, the 28-year-old hottie once dated the sexual predator who dons a number seven jersey for the Steelers on Sundays.

The relationship between the two golfers was confirmed by Gulbis after she was seen following Johnson throughout the back nine of his third round Saturday at the Tournament of Champions. Johnson has declined comment about their relationship, but it’s worth noting he pulled out of next weekend’s Sony Open “to take care of some things at home.” Who knows what that means.

All I know is that these two will join the long line of infamous athlete-celebrity couples here at LBS, and when you think of the two of them together, remember that Tiger Woods once described Johnson’s game as “stupid long.” Take that to mean whatever you wish and bid the couple a wonderful future, though we’re not sure what odds you would get in a casino for them to stay together for the long haul.

Dustin Johnson Grounding Penalty: Fair or Unfair?

Dustin Johnson was in the mix for the win at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Johnson would have been in a three-way tie for the lead at -11 if it weren’t for a two stroke penalty he received for grounding his club in a bunker on the 18th hole. The tour ruled he grounded his club and gave him the penalty, taking him out of the playoff. Here’s the Dustin Johnson video from the 18th hole:
