Major League Baseball still has to hand down its verdict into the Boston Red Sox over sign stealing allegations in 2018, but some teams are definitely checking in on the situation before making big moves.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Los Angeles Dodgers checked in with MLB before trading for Mookie Betts, seeking to ensure that the outfielder wouldn’t be caught up in the findings before acquiring him.
“I know with our front office, we do a lot of our due diligence before we make a deal,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We have no questions or any concerns, none at all.”
The trade went through after the Dodgers received assurances that there was no reason to be concerned about Betts’ role in any sign stealing.
The investigation into whatever Boston did during the 2018 season remains ongoing. An answer is expected by the start of the season, though MLB hasn’t been giving clear estimates, and the findings are not expected to be as severe as what the Houston Astros were up to in 2017.
