The Houston Astros cheating scandal has now reached the halls of Congress.
Representative Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) has formally requested a Congressional oversight hearing on both Houston’s cheating and MLB’s response to it. In a letter, he stated that it is Congress, specifically the Committee on Energy and Commerce, that is tasked with oversight of professional sports, and it was important to determine how much cheating is taking place in the sport and whether the league is addressing it quickly or severely enough.

This request for a hearing comes at a time when political figures are already looking at MLB with skepticism over the sport’s plans to contract dozens of minor league teams.
It may be that the fallout from this scandal is just getting started, particularly for Rob Manfred and the league. There is no guarantee that Congress pursues this, though they do have oversight power over pro sports. If they do, they may find that many within the sport think the Astros got off easy.
