Report: Indians want to extend Carlos Santana
The Cleveland Indians are hoping to say “Oye Como Va” to one of their most important hitters before he becomes a free agent.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports Thursday that the Indians would like to extend slugger Carlos Santana, who is in the final year of his contract.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old Santana batted .259/.366/.498 with 34 home runs and 87 RBIs (both career-highs) for the Indians in 2016.
Heyman adds that the deals given to Mark Trumbo (three years, $37.5 million) and Kendrys Morales (three years, $33 million) this winter could be reasonable comparisons. But after the Indians splurged a bit in free agency in the months following their American League pennant win, an extension for Santana would almost certainly mean having to cut costs elsewhere.
