There has been some talk about the New York Mets potentially shopping their two biggest arms in trade talks prior to the July 31 deadline, and one of those pitchers is hoping the team will part ways with him if they don’t intend to sign him to a long-term extension.
On Monday, Jacob deGrom’s agent told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that the right-hander wants the Mets to “seriously consider trade opportunities now” if they don’t intend to work out a contract extension.
CAA’s Brodie van Wagenen, agent for Jacob deGrom: “We have discussed Jacob’s future with the Mets at length. Jacob has expressed interest in exploring a long-term partnership that would keep him in a Mets uniform for years to come.” 1/2

More from Van Wagenen: “If the Mets don’t share same interest, we believe their best course of action is to seriously consider trade opportunities now.
The inertia of current situation could complicate Jacob’s relationship with the club and creates an atmosphere of indecision.”— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 16, 2018
The Mets are currently 39-55 and in last place in the NL East, and they are reportedly open to being sellers at the deadline. However, a previous report from Rosenthal indicated they may prefer to trade Noah Syndergaard rather than deGrom.
deGrom, 30, is having an outstanding season. He’s 5-4 with a 1.68 ERA in 19 starts. He’s received minimal run support, which is something one teammate actually apologized to him for. While deGrom is under team control for two more seasons, it makes sense that he wants to cash in with a long-term deal now given his age.
