Ketel Marte is not playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks at the moment after his home burglary incident earlier this week.
The Dbacks announced on Friday that they have placed their star infielder Marte on the restricted list. Arizona has signed fellow infielder Sergio Alcantara to temporarily take Marte’s spot on the active roster.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports that Marte requested time off after his home in Scottsdale, Ariz. was burglarized on Tuesday. It is unclear when Marte could return to the field, but Arizona is playing a three-game home set vs. St. Louis this weekend followed by another three-game home set vs. Houston (before going out on the road).
Marte’s residence was burglarized while he was playing in the MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta, Ga. on Tuesday. The three-time All-Star Marte started for the National League at second base and hit a two-RBI double in the first inning to open up the game’s scoring.
Nobody was home at Marte’s residence during the time of the break-in, but the thieves managed to steal “numerous personal items,” including jewelry. You can read the full details about the burglary here.
Marte, 31, is hitting .290 with 19 home runs and 40 RBIs through 68 games this season for the 47-50 Dbacks. But he was also involved in an incident in June where an opposing fan made a remark about Marte’s late mother (who died in a 2017 car crash) in the middle of a game. Now after his challenging past month, Marte is deciding to take some time away.
