Matt Harvey issues apology, says he is ‘extremely embarrassed’
Matt Harvey returned from his three-game suspension on Tuesday, and he apologized for the irresponsible way in which he carried himself over the weekend.
Harvey admitted that he was out past team curfew on Friday night and played golf on Saturday before not showing up to the ballpark. He made no mention of calling the team to inform them he had a migraine.

“I apologize for my actions. Obviously, I’m extremely embarrassed by my actions,” Harvey said. “I apologize to my teammates, the Mets organization, the Wilpons and all the way down to Mets fans for doing what I did.
“Yes, I was out on Friday night past curfew. I did play golf Saturday morning and I put myself in a bad place to be ready for showing up to a ballgame. I take full blame for that. … I’m doing everything in my power so that never happens again.”
Taking accountability is an important step, but this has been a recurring theme for Harvey. The 28-year-old has a long way to go to prove he does not feel he is above team rules.
That said, there were reports that Harvey felt he did nothing wrong and was planning to file a grievance against the Mets for suspending him. Now that he has publicly admitted he was wrong, it is not likely that he will go that route.
Judging by some of the things Harvey’s teammates have said about him in recent days, it’s safe to assume words aren’t going to cut it. Time will tell if he can show a true commitment to the team.
