Report: Mets likely to trade Zack Wheeler by trade deadline
The New York Mets appear to finally be accepting the reality that their season is a lost one, and one player with an expiring contract will likely be on the move as a result.
According to Mike Mazzeo of Yahoo Sports, a Mets source said the chances were “pretty high” that pitcher Zack Wheeler would no longer be with the organization on August 1 once the trade deadline passes.
“It’s just where we’re at,” the source added. “If we played better in San Francisco, it might have changed everything.”
The Mets lost three of four in San Francisco to the surging Giants over the weekend, dropping them seven games out of the second wild card spot. Despite what the source said, there was little chance of the Mets making the playoffs even before their fate was sealed in San Francisco.
Wheeler’s health has been a question for much of the month, but he’s expected to be pitching again Friday. That may be a key audition for other teams who may be interested in the 29-year-old, who would likely be a rental.
