Mookie Wilson and Bill Buckner were tied together by the infamous play in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, when Wilson’s ground ball went through Buckner’s legs to extend the series to Game 7.
After that play, the two forged a lifelong friendship, and Wilson was one of the first to react to the news of Buckner’s passing on Monday in a statement.
Mookie Wilson, re Bill Buckner: "I was saddened to learn about Bill's death. We had developed a friendship that lasted well over 30 years. I felt badly for some of the things he went through. Bill was a great, great baseball player whose legacy should not be defined by one play"

Wilson and Buckner were known to be very close in recent years despite the circumstances that linked them together. There’s no doubt that the former Met is deeply saddened by the death of his friend.
