New York Mets pitcher Griffin Canning went down with a non-contact injury on Thursday, and video evidence appears to confirm he suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
Canning was pitching in the top of the third inning of his Mets’ game against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., when Atlanta’s Nick Allen hit a groundball to the left side. Canning tried to push off his left leg to go move for the ball, but he was unable to do so. He tried to move on one leg and eventually fell to the ground.

A close-up video shows that Canning’s left calf muscle vibrated, which is a telling sign of an Achilles tendon tear.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed after the game that Canning has an Achilles injury.
“We think it’s an Achilles. He’s getting an MRI. We’re waiting for the results, but it looks like it’s an Achilles,” Mendoza told reporters.
That’s a rough break for Canning, who was having an excellent season. He was acquired by the team in the offseason and entered his start on Thursday with a 7-3 record, 3.91 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 15 starts.
Canning missed time in 2021 and all of 2022 with a back injury. To go down with a torn Achilles tendon would be a rough break for the 29-year-old.
