If the Dallas Mavericks decide to trade Anthony Davis, they should have at least three significant suitors.
The Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and Toronto Raptors are expected to pursue Davis, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The Mavericks are said to be open to conversations about Davis, but are not completely set on trading him, and would even still consider a contract extension.
Not coincidentally, all three teams linked to Davis are potential Eastern Conference contenders. The conference is regarded as more wide open than the West, meaning a number of teams will genuinely believe they have a chance of breaking through and reaching the NBA Finals if they can add a quality player like Davis. The Pistons, in particular, are very young, and might benefit from a veteran like Davis.
Davis will become eligible to sign a 4-year, $275 million max extension on Aug. 6. Without an extension, he could become a free agent as soon as 2027.
There have been other teams linked to Davis as well, but it would make the most sense for him to go to a contender. Injuries remain an issue for the 32-year-old forward, but he is averaging 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for Dallas this season in 10 appearances.
Despite the interest in Davis, the Mavericks may have to accept that they will not necessarily get a huge package for him if they do move him on.
