Can the Warriors break the Bulls’ record?

Steve Kerr face

Can the Golden State Warriors break the ’95-’96 Chicago Bulls record of a 72-10 regular season record? Their chances of doing so took a major hit on Tuesday night, and now it’s not even certain that they will clinch the top overall seed in the Western Conference, as hard as that is to believe.

The Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime 124-117 on Tuesday night for just their ninth loss of the season. Golden State has now lost two of three at home after previously winning 54 straight games at Oracle Arena (the Celtics beat them there on Friday).

The Warriors are now 69-9 and have the following four games remaining. They must win all four to break Chicago’s record.

Thursday April 7 vs. San Antonio
Saturday April 9 @ Memphis
Sunday April 10 @ San Antonio
Wednesday April 13 vs. Memphis

That’s four games against playoff teams, including two against the Spurs, who already beat them in San Antonio last month. That Sunday game against the Spurs looks particularly dangerous, as it is the second game of a back-to-back on the road. The Warriors probably won’t get to their hotel until around 3:00 am that day, while the Spurs have Saturday off and will be well rested for the game.

Now here’s the crazy part: There are two scenarios under which the 65-12 Spurs can actually overtake the Warriors for the top seed in the West.

– If the Warriors lose their remaining four games and the Spurs go 5-0 or 4-1, San Antonio would get the top seed.
– If the Warriors lose three of four and the Spurs go 5-0, San Antonio would get the top seed.

Things just got a lot more interesting!
