Report: Clippers looked into buying Kawhi Leonard’s logo
How serious are the Los Angeles Clippers about pursuing free agent-to-be Kawhi Leonard? So serious that they looked into trying to buy his personal logo.
According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the Clippers looked into whether they could purchase the portion of Leonard’s “Klaw” logo that is owned by Nike. Such a purchase would have likely meant they’d offer him the full rights to the logo if he signed as a free agent.
Stein notes Nike would not sell and it would almost certainly be viewed as a salary cap violation anyway.
This is not the first indication that the Clippers will be willing to do virtually anything they can to try to recruit Leonard to the team. They will, of course, face stiff competition, but they’ll be hoping that Leonard being a Los Angeles native plus the max contract they can offer will be enticing. It seems they’re looking at other options to make it even more tempting, too.
