Wizards trade Markieff Morris to get under luxury tax
The Washington Wizards are tearing it all the way down.
After learning that John Wall would need surgery to repair a torn Achilles’ tendon, the Wizards decided to begin dismantling their team. Their first move was to trade Otto Porter to the Bulls, shedding $27 million from next season’s salary cap commitments. Their next move was to deal Markieff Morris and a future second-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans for Wesley Johnson.
Morris is making $8.6 million this season. By getting rid of him for Johnson, the Wizards saved $2.5 million, which got them out of the luxury tax for next season by $200,000.
According to Spotrac, the Wizards were $2.3M into the luxury tax threshold after the Otto trade and before this deal. $2.5M of savings with Johnson would mean they can avoid the tax now. https://t.co/rCPDPXsIgK

Morris is out with a neck injury and it’s unclear when he will return.
