Oscar Robertson to Dwight Howard: Keep your mouth shut and play basketball

Dwight Howard is in somewhat of a tough situation in Orlando. By tough situation, I mean he has a few more months left of trying to not sound like a jerk before he can move on with the next chapter of his career and sign a massive contract. NBA legend Oscar Robertson offered some advice for Superman on Wednesday.

“Keep your mouth shut and play basketball,” Robertson said during an interview with 740 The Game in Orlando. ”If he wants to be traded, he’s going to be traded. Go and talk to the owners and say, ‘I want to be traded’ and keep it a secret.’ In a situation like this, he can’t win. …  Anytime they (Magic) stumble and fall and every time they get beat, they’re going to blame Dwight Howard and it’s totally unfair because it’s not all his fault. I don’t think management has done a great job in keeping certain players on the team. They had a nucleus of players that got them to the Finals and then, all of the sudden, it’s gone downhill.”

Basically, Robertson is siding with Howard. At this point the Magic have accepted the fact that Howard won’t be with them next season. If they’re going to trade Howard — and they should if they don’t plan on keeping him — they will trade him. Dwight won’t do himself any good by speaking out about it in public or becoming a problem. His best bet is to sit back and let teams like the Nets woo him and salivate over him.
