Despite their relationship with superstar Kawhi Leonard hanging by a thread, the San Antonio Spurs are still holding out hope for a happily-ever-after.
Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News reported on Monday that the Spurs would like to meet with Leonard and his camp soon in order to mend fences and clear the path for a supermax contract offer (which for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year would be five years and $219 million).
The two sides have been involved in a highly uncharacteristic saga for their organization thanks to Leonard’s mysterious quad injury that cost him all but nine games this season. The former Finals MVP’s slow rehab and perceived mistrust of Spurs doctors in favor of his own medical team appeared to be a major source of internal strife throughout the year. It has also led to rampant speculation that the relationship may be damaged beyond repair.
The 26-year-old Leonard, who as it stands right now can be a free agent in 2019, will be eligible to sign the supermax on July 1, something that only the Spurs can offer him. Granted, he may have bigger priorities that just money.
