Oscar De La Hoya issues challenge to Floyd Mayweather

Oscar de la Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya has a major fight to promote, and now he’s trying to involve one of the biggest names in boxing.

After Canelo Alvarez beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday in Las Vegas, De La Hoya announced that Alvarez would fight Gennady Golovkin next. That’s a fight boxing fans have been dying to see, and Oscar’s Golden Boy Promotions is making it happen.

De La Hoya appeared on ESPN’s “First Take” Tuesday with hosts Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman to promote the September fight. Late in the interview, the Golden Boy issued a challenge to Floyd Mayweather Jr. De La Hoya wants Mayweather to scrap the idea of fighting Conor McGregor in favor of fighting the winner of Canelo-GGG.

“Forget about The Notorious One. Forget about a fighter who has zero experience, who has zero fights, who has zero amateur experience. Forget about that. Mayweather’s better than that,” said De La Hoya

“Mayweather, if you want to fight or have a rematch against Canelo, or a fight against Golovkin, go after them. After Canelo and Golovkin fight, go after the winner.”

Sorry, Oscar, but that’s not happening. Mayweather is all but retired from boxing. He has no desire to fight someone who is dangerous, who is bigger, and who could put a stain on his undefeated record. McGregor makes sense as an opponent because he’s not a professional boxer. Floyd could follow the gameplan of his career with McGregor; maximize money earned while minimizing risk. He would come out of retirement for that payday. But he’s not coming out of retirement to potentially be knocked out by GGG or have a tough rematch against an older and more experienced Canelo.

Not happening, Oscar.
