Eastern Washington head coach Jim Hayford is making me and others feel pretty good about picking them to upset Georgetown in their 4-13 matchup in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament.
Hayford joined the “Jim Rome Show” on CBS Sports Radio Wednesday and spoke confidently about his team’s chances of beating the Hoyas.
“We’re capable. If you’re in a pool, you can fill it in — you want to put the Eagles in. We play fast, we’re the third-leading scoring team in the country, we have the country’s leading scorer in the country,” Hayford said.
People aren’t just picking Eastern Washington to win because of what they can do, but also because of whom they’re facing. Georgetown has lost to double-digit seeds five times since 2008, beginning with a defeat to Stephen Curry’s Davidson squad and ending with a defeat to Florida Gulf Coast in 2013.
Hayford is confident that his team is going to be on that list after the week.
“We’re going to win,” Hayford promised before hanging up the phone. He also said that he would “talk again” with Rome, which is an indication that he plans to reach the Sweet 16.
Say what you want about Eastern Washington, but you can’t say they don’t have the proper mindset heading into their game.
