Trae Young’s freshman season is officially over, and next up for him is the NBA. Or maybe not.
Young’s Oklahoma Sooners lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday to Rhode Island, which ends their season. The freshman sensation scored 28 points with seven assists and made 50 percent of his shots.
Young had a stellar start to his freshman year and averaged 27.4 points and 8.8 assists per game this season. The great start and all the publicity that came with it led many to believe Young would be a lottery pick in the upcoming draft. But Young’s father says he would like his son to return to school for his sophomore season.
“I would love for him to think about coming back and maybe being national player of the year next year,” Rayford Young told Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde. “But it’s his career, his life.”
Though Oklahoma should be improved next season with another year of seasoning for many of their players, including Young, it would be hard for the guard to pass up the draft. He’s expected to be a high draft pick. If his goal is to play professionally, now would be a good time to pursue that.
