Athletes draw motivation from a lot of places, and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is taking some from a preseason prediction that keeps being proved wrong.
Mayfield arrived at the Rose Bowl for the College Football Playoff semifinal on Monday lugging a sign that simply read “Pretenders.”

The sign is in reference to a preseason prediction from ESPN’s Lee Corso, who gave the team that label while stating he expected them to underachieve in 2017.
That obviously didn’t happen. The Sooners went 12-1, won the Big 12, and are one game away from playing for a championship. This remark must have really bugged them considering coach Lincoln Riley also referenced it earlier in the season.
