Former Texas Longhorns star wide receiver Jordan Shipley is in critical condition after a fiery ranch accident, according to his family.
In a statement released via the Texas athletic department, Shipley’s family said that the accident happened on Tuesday afternoon on his ranch near his hometown of Burnet, Texas. A machine Shipley was operating caught fire, and while he was able to get out, he sustained “severe burns.”
The 40-year-old Shipley was taken to a local hospital before getting “care-flighted” to another hospital in Austin.
The family also shared that Shipley is in stable condition, as they continue to monitor his status.
Shipley had a memorable career with the Longhorns.
From 2006 to 2009, he amassed 3,191 receiving yards and 33 touchdowns on 249 receptions through 53 games. He remains Texas’ all-time leader in career receptions with 248 catches and second in school history with 3,191 receiving yards. After his college career, he turned pro and was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Shipley played his first two seasons in the league with the Bengals, recording 614 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns on 56 receptions across 17 games. He later suited up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars before hanging up his cleats in 2014.
