The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets put Clemson in crisis Saturday by perfectly executive a 55-yard fire drill field goal in a 24-21 upset win.
Clemson trailed for a good part of Saturday’s game at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. but rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 21. That gave Georgia Tech the ball back with 3:26 to go in a tie game, however.
The ensuing drive stalled out at the Clemson 37, and with no timeouts left, Georgia Tech had to rush its field goal unit onto the field with roughly 20 seconds left and the clock running. The Yellow Jackets managed to get set up and, with two seconds left, kicker Aidan Birr connected from 55 yards to clinch the upset.

College kickers have a reputation for not being reliable, and rushing an entire special teams unit on the field in under 20 seconds is something that not even NFL teams get right all the time. The fact that they converted a 55-yard field goal just makes it better. Georgia Tech deserves a lot of credit for nailing this, and it is a big reason why they are 3-0 for the first time since 2016.
As for Clemson, they are now 1-2, and have not looked convincing in any of their games so far. It is safe to say they are miles away from the target Dabo Swinney has set for his program, and are staring at a hugely disappointing season if they do not pick things up quickly.
