Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten had a successful 17-year NFL career with 11 trips to the Pro Bowl and four 1,000-yard seasons.
After retiring, he became the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas. Now, he is being hired as the tight ends coach with the Oklahoma Sooners, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
“Oklahoma has finalized a deal to hire former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten as its tight ends coach, sources tell @CBSSports.”
Last offseason, Witten had picked up steam for the Cowboys’ head coach opening before they hired Brian Schottenheimer. Former Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware had even advocated for Witten to get a look as a head coach at that time.
However, he will now make the transition to college football, joining Oklahoma in the SEC. Also on the Sooners’ staff is former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray, who was teammates with Witten in Dallas.
Witten did well as a high school head coach. After a rough 2-8 start in his first season, he compiled a 44-7 mark over the past four seasons.
It’s also worth noting that Witten’s son, Cooper, is a four-star recruit in the Class of 2027 and already has an offer from Oklahoma. Cooper played for his dad at Liberty Christian and has one year of high school remaining, so this could help the Sooners emerge as the favorites for the talented linebacker.
Oklahoma fired tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley after five seasons with the program.
