Ken Whisenhunt interviewing with Georgia Tech
Ken Whisenhunt is taking steps towards potentially becoming the next head football coach at Georgia Tech.
The current Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator is set to interview with Georgia Tech, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Whisenhunt, 56, is from Georgia and played at Georgia Tech from 1981-1984. He played in the NFL and then went into coaching and has coached exclusively in the NFL since 1997.
Whisenhunt’s stint as an offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers helped him land the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job, where he went 45-51 over six seasons, including a Super Bowl appearance in his second year. After being fired, he became the Chargers’ offensive coordinator for 2013 and then was hired as the Titans’ head coach in 2014 and 2015, where they went 3-20.
Whisenhunt is now back with the Chargers as their offensive coordinator for the third year in a row.
The Yellow Jackets are in the market for a new head coach since Paul Johnson announced he would be retiring after the team’s bowl game. Johnson has been the head coach at Georgia Tech since 2008. The team has gone 83-59 under him and will be playing in their ninth bowl game under his leadership. Though Tech has had two 11-win seasons, the ceiling on the team seems to be fairly low due to their old school option style of football.
Whisenhunt has been reported as the leading candidate for the job.
