Tennessee State LB Christion Abercrombie upgraded to stable condition

Christion Abercrombie

Tennessee State linebacker Christion Abercrombie continues to show positive signs as he recovers from a horrific head injury he suffered in a game two weeks ago.

On Sunday, Tennessee State coach Rod Reed told Mike Organ of The Tennesseean that Abercrombie’s mother, Staci, said her son has been upgraded from critical to stable condition.

“I called his mom (Staci) late Saturday night and she called me back today and said he had been upgraded from critical to stable,” Reed said. “It’s really great news.”

Later on Saturday, Tennessee State’s sports information department provided more good news when they reported that Abercrombie had been off a ventilator for more than 24 hours and was successfully breathing on his own. He has been showing other positive signs with his cognitive and motor skills, too.

“His mom said he’s giving thumbs up,” Reed said. “He’s counting to four on his fingers. He’s opened one of his eyes and followed her around the room a little bit. He’s responding to stuff that they’re talking to him about; he understands what they’re talking about.”

Abercrombie collapsed after exiting TSU’s game against Vanderbilt on Sept. 29 and was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center for emergency surgery. He was listed in critical condition in the ensuing hours and days. Staci Abercrombie has been providing positive updates about Christion on Twitter, and we hope that will continue.
